What is YOUR most recent wine purchase? (Part 2)

375s age much quicker and I’ve noticed brown more easily. 750 is a better format for old Sauternes. Right now I think the 01 in 375 is about peak and will fall off from here where the 750s go 50-80 years easily.

Hmm. I have not even put eyes on my 375s of 2001 Y’quem (nor the 750s) in more than 10 years. Maybe I should look at one.

1989 Couley-Dutheil Chinon “Clos de l’Echo”
1985 Chasse Spleen
Both for 80 (euros)

1936 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
Provenance is a question mark (previous owner bought it 10 years ago on a website “with a lot of old wines” (birth year of his grandfather). Original capsule, general shape of bottle seemed very good, fill level seems in line with the age of the bottle, but it’s not the strongest vintage. Chances this will still be drinkable hover between ‘zero’ and ‘slim’, but to me worth the gamble for 70 euros. “For science!”

1999 Produttori
2018 Produttori
2001 Costamagna Roche dell Anunziata
2006 Gianfranco Alessandria barolo ‘San Giovanni’

120 euro for these 4. There should have been 2x the ‘99 but the (senior) seller miscounted / misremembered. I accepted a 2018 as replacement (given these very
acceptable prices).

1986 Grand Puy Lacoste
1996 Lagrange
2005 Lafon Rochet
2005 Prieure Lichine

280 euros for these. Not the best deal, but acceptable prices to add other vintages of wines I already have.

1961 Pio Cesare - 180 for 3
1973 Fontanafredda barbaresco - 25 euros. Slim chances but “for science”
1968 Borgogno barolo Riserva - 60 + 11 shipping

2015 Pichon Baron
2016 Pichon Baron
2015 Cos
2016 Cos
2020 Cos

640 for the 5

Wow! I haven’t seen the Fleur de Jauge in decades

I’m drinking it right now! Delicious, surprising amount of dark fruit to accompany the cherries and red appleskin. Great grip, though the tannins could stand a bit more time to soften. This really doesn’t take a back seat to any of the Saint-Emilion Grand Crus Classées that I’ve had from this vintage. Terrific value; I’d say 93-94 points.

Trying to complete the Tour des Grands Crus; picked up a couple I haven’t tasted. The caviste told me that Saint-Pierre 2017 is singing.

I had a Domaine de Chevalier 1936 which was ok when opened but decayed quickly.

will need a report on that Pierre – I’m gonna backfill '16.

Extracted from my France/Spain Travelogue:

We had a fantastic day walking around Bordeaux today. We’ve found some great wine shops, fromageries, boulangeries, and cafés, as well as beautiful neighborhoods, Roman ruins, churches and more.
“When in Rome” didn’t quite hold true today. I passed on buying Bordeaux in favor of Champagne and Chablis. We’ve had some very nice Bordeaux Blanc in restaurants, but apparently I can’t escape my long established tastes and favorites.
