What Is the Deal with Carneros?

OK, major thread drift: Mel Knox mentioned Molnar, which led me to the website of Obsidian Ridge, which says “They discovered an abandoned walnut orchard on the volcanic slopes of the high Mayacamas Mountains of Lake County,”.

Mr. Geography Person (me) has always thought that the Mayacamas Mountains were the ridge between Napa and Sonoma.

So my first question is: What are they talking about???

And my second question is: Is their Pinot Noir from their Poseidon Vineyard Estate in Carneros good?

Thank you in advance.

I worked with the people who own these vineyards so I’ve heard their rap…many times. They are also partners in a Hungarian barrel project with the Taransaud people.

1/Lake County used to be part of Napa County…until they stupidly rebelled and eventually killed grape prices.

2/The Mayacamas Mtns extend well into Lake County and end up just west of Clear lake. You can google this.

3/The Cabernet keeps getting better and better. I used to joke with one of the owners that it should be called Tannin Ridge. The '09 really reminded me of the '70 Mayacamas Cab…drinkable of in 2005. But they have learned about tannin management.

4/Pinot is really good…is it great?? Dunno, but it is certainly a great value. Ditto the Chardonnay.
