What is the best white in the Western hemisphere? (TN: 2003 Mount Eden Chardonnay Santa Cruz Estate)

So, what is the best white wine made in the Western hemisphere? For the sake of argument, let’s ignore sparkling and dessert wines, and only consider wines with at least a 10-year track record.

My nomination is Mount Eden’s “Estate” Chardonnay:

• 2003 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Estate Bottled Santa Cruz Mountains - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (9/16/2009)
  Deep yellow-gold. Slate, almonds and vanilla custard on the nose. Oaked but well integrated with huge, rich pineapple, lemon and custard, with a moderately long finish. Better as it warmed up. Excellent, and still very good on the second day. (Sweet Basil, Needham, MA)

The Domaine Serene Etoile is probably the closest thing the US has to Montrachet. The 04 is incredible, the 05 a bit leaner and not quite up to previous vintages, and the 06 is just beautiful. I’ve been savoring the last of my 04s, are they are just works of art!!!

The 06 will have many years of life. I drank an 02 recently from magnum and it was as crisp and mineral driven as the day it went into the bottle.

Well, not everyone’s palate can be as refined and sophisticated as, well, one of us Kidding of course, there are many great wines, just throwing this one into the mix as something I like a lot
