What Goodfellow/Matello are you drinking?

Do you know Terry? He drank through the entire 2021 PGC portfolio. Now he’s burning up the 2022s. :muscle:

Terry, the short answer is that it’s delicious. It will very likely get better, but it’s excellent right now. When I last tasted it (around Thanksgiving), it really stood out over everything else I tasted on a day when I visited three wineries (Cameron, Belle Pente, and Goodfellow). I’m not buying a lot of Pinot right (already have too much), but I bought a couple bottles, and my daughter and SIL bought half a case.

Ha!! That 2021 PGC Corrine Anklebreaker Block was so tight I had to get a crowbar out of the garage . . . and it still didn’t open up much! :grinning: Not going to pull the cork out of another one of those for some time to come . . . . :rofl:

That said, each and every other PGC 2021 I’ve had (many of them multiple times) has been so generous (despite being so young) and some of my favorite wines. That 2021 Wind Ridge has blown me away each and every time I’ve had it.

But I am learning that with Marcus’ Goodfellow Pinot Noir bottles I really do need to give them some time. :wine_glass:

Although Apple Weather has indicated heavy snow and a 30 degree temperature for the last 4 hours or so, Cora has been nothing but a cold rain or sleet. Bummer. At least the bottles will be cold…

Oooh! A Heritage #2!

Do you drink your reds and whites at the same temp? I can see drinking everything at moderate cellar temp (much like they do at the winery),

No, that’s just a quick photo op. I’ll drink reds at room temperature or a few minutes in the fridge. I’ll put whites in the freezer for 30 - 45 minutes. Like Jim Maresh, I like Chardonnays cold. They will warm up over the course of the evening.

I opened one in Jan 2023 and thought it was very nice albeit not showing everything. I almost opened one for a dinner on New Year’s Eve.

I don’t think most of the Heritage wines are ones that are harder to drink young than the SVD Pinots. I think they are intended to eventually reach a higher peak, but can be very enjoyable along the way. There is a higher sunk cost, to be sure. But you can’t buy a much of 20 year wines and never open them to decide what you think of them, whether to buy more, etc. Well, I suppose you can but not my approach

Nice! Let me know how the Richard’s is doing day 2 (and 3 if it makes it that long).

That was always my philosophy as well, even with young Burgundy back when the vintages were cooler. I just like to know (and perhaps it’s how I acquired a taste for tannins).

Also interested in the 2019 richards, havent opened any of mine yet.

Just popped the cork on a 2019 Whistling Ridge Chardonnay, and my little sample pour is already singing. This isn’t going to make day 2, but hopefully me and my wife can at least stretch it out over a few hours. :rofl:

James, how was the 2015 Heritage #4? Am thinking of going down to the cellar to pull the cork on one and decant it for about 5 hours, as one of the wines to take to today’s gathering of friends. :wine_glass:

Pulled the trigger on a handful of wines made by Marcus:

2013 Goodfellow Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir;
2014 Goodfellow Bishop Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir;
2015 Goodfellow Heritage #4 Pinot Noir;
2022 Goodfellow West Field, Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir; and,
2018 Glennon Chardonnay.

The 2013 is in the glass. I’ll open the 2022 once I get over to my friends. Getting together with a group of friends I’ve been really close with for 40 years, give or take. Feeling lucky we’re all still around . . . . :wine_glass: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Edit (day after): all of these wines are in a really nice place right now. The older reds were all fairly generous, both with the nose and palate. And all of those older wines filled out/gained a richness as the evening went by. That 2022 West Field is the first really “young” Goodfellow that I’ve had that was really open for business, and it too was just wonderful. One of the pretty unique notes on the nose was an herbal thing all of us were trying to identify (reminded various folks of marjoram, tarragon, an Herbs de Provence thing, etc., going on) and which we all loved. Five of us were drinking these wines and I encouraged everyone to have a glass of the '22 early . . . and so that bottle did not last long. But everyone loved all five of the different wines. :wine_glass: While I am going to let my remaining bottles of these wines sleep for a bit, each of them seems worth a try at this point in time.

A 2015 Heritage No. 4 a couple of months ago was fantastic and kept getting better with air.

Sorry Terry. No bottles were harmed, opened or consumed last weekend, but there’s a chance for another winter storm next week.

I might open the 2019 Richard’s this weekend. Time will tell.

That’s a nice lineup of Goodfellow wines for your tasting last weekend. Glad that you enjoyed the wines and time with your friends. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Doing my part. Brought the Goodfellow WV over to a friend who wants to try more wine. He opened the other one to share. Needless to say he won’t be buying Meiomi anymore.

I’m glad to hear he’s moving on from Meiomi! I believe that should also save him some money, as our WV is usually around $25 retail.

Also saves him 19.4 g/L of residual sugar!

I thought Meomei was like $13-15. I’m using it in my price tracker for the next 4 years as a surrogate for domestic wine prices.

It might be now. I remember seeing it at $28 a while back. And I definitely don’t go looking for it.
