What fraction of participants here subscribe to Wine Advocate?

I don’t subscribe now, it lapsed after the wall was erected, after almost 30 years. I hadn’t paid attention to the reviews for many years anyway, except David Schildknect. I might renew so David can give me guidance in the Loire and maybe Germany. And I’m curious about Antonio in Burgundy and California, just because there is so much talk about it here. I’m certainly not looking for any critical advice from him, but still curious.

Lew, quite frankly, it was exactly that curiosity that brought me back. Given his coverage so far, he continues to hold my interest.

I absolutely agree…though I only found this site a couple of months ago. I’ve been a subscriber there for 4 years but already in my 2 months here have already gained more information and honest insights than all of my time over there. Thanks everyone! newhere

I subscribed to the Wine Advocate for at least 25 years. I stopped a couple of years ago because (1) the print version did not have a lot of the material I was interested in (for example not all of David Schildknecht’s German wine reviews would be in there) and (2) I found the online version almost unusable. It took me forever to navigate through articles on the online version. I could not download issues or even complete articles onto my computer. It was just horrible to use. If I ever found out that the online version became usable, I might well subscribe again.

FYI, I currently subscribe to only two wine newsletters, Burghound and A View from the Cellar.

Neal on Spain, that would be interesting. But I refuse to pay Parker anything, he’s such a jerk (& I speak from personal experience).

Lisa was doing AU/NZ when I left, so I guess she hasn’t had a change of assignment. Come to think of it, I bought a bottle or two of AU “Red Silk” from Posner because of her TN; it was pretty good. Her TNs were very nice, good descriptions IMO.

I used it very little until it went subscription. Carrie still has a subscription to monitor rating info on a timely basis and snoop commerce corner, but I’m not sure if she still posts much.

I appreciate a wide spectrum of views and opinions. Anyone who only listens to Rush Limbaugh or only reads WB are in the same camp, imo. pileon

I still subscribe, but might let it lapse this April. AG is doing a fine job, but imho IWC has far better coverage of the wines I like. The BB on ebob is also not so very interesting these days. It’s sad in way because it’d so much more interesting if we had two “competing” open boards.

I subscribed for a few years, but my subscription lapsed a long time ago. Somewhat symbolically, the last issue I received was his review of the 1993 red burgundies.

Not a chance in Hell.

WOW what a surprise! deadhorse [pillow-fight.gif]

I subscribe to WB, WA, Tanzer, Burghound. I am quite interested in what Antonio Galloni has to say about Piedmont wines and get a kick out of reading Neal Martin. I like to read David S’s reviews of German and Austrian wines.

I subscribe, and said I don’t “participate” because I don’t post over there (or so rarely it doesn’t matter), but it’s a useful site to read – though a small fraction of what it used to be, something I think they’re happy with. I find the burgundy reviews from recent vintages very useful as an augmentation, or alternate point of view, to Burghound, as is Tanzer. I also find the reviews of old CA cab, and Bordeaux, all useful for predicting readiness and general suitability. I don’t currently buy either of those categories, so the recent reviews don’t matter to me.

If they would drop all the wordy descriptive crap and just list the scores, I would resubscribe.

Heehee.

I dropped it years ago, but decided to sign up for a month to see what Galloni on Burgundy would be like.
Somehow, I have not yet gotten around to checking much of it out.
It just seems like visiting a strange land while wearing strange clothes…just off somehow.

#4; I don’t subscribe anymore.

I dropped after they walled up the bulletin board.

I then resubscribed when mr galloni took over California and burgundy.

I think I’ve posed two or three tasting notes over there. That is about it.

dropped my subscription yrs ago and refused to subscribe after the wall went up. Don’t miss it, as the coverage I wanted was so sparse.

I’ve never myself subscribed to any wine reviewer. Not a single one. Several years ago, someone gave me a subscription to Wine Spectator, but that’s about it. I’d read the mags for interesting restaurants in the US though. Their wine reviews? I paid them no mind.

I never bought any of Parker’s books either, but a friend gave me a couple. I’ve also received books by Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, and a few others, but I’ve never bought any myself.

Interesting, Noel - while I understand a lot of folks not wanting to subscribe to services, I do find I like books on wine for general reference. I’ve got a number of editions of RMP’s Bordeaux, and several books on Italian vino as well.

As many have already said, I was a long-time subscriber but all the “noise” generated by the demise of the Squires Board prompted me to re-evaluate/terminate my support. Can’t say I miss it, as one Wine board is about all I have the time for, but I do miss some of the characters/fellow posters over there that never made the migration here.
