What do I need to know about Riesling clones, soil and rootstocks?

While we were suckering vines yesterday, I asked Erich Weber about his choice of rootstock. He prefers Börner to SO4 because it is highly drought tolerant and, therefore, better for dry, stony, well-drained slate soils.

I don’t know anything about this topic, but have heard endless comments and opinions from Finger Lakes growers such as Frederic Franc, Hermann Wiemer, and colleagues at Cornell. Otto Selback and Paul Hobbs were, at one time, considering a joint venture in the Finger Lakes, but I believe that did not work out. So they, too, must have some knowledge.
