What could cause Barbarescos to be valued more highly than Barolos in the future?

True…I should have said that they are in Barolo and more known for those wines.

I think that one issue for Barbaresco is that the pyramid of quality is fine at the very top with Giacosa, Gaja and Roagna. It is that next tier that seems to be thin: those wines that excellent, but may not be the pinnacle. Clearly the total area of vineyards is smaller and at lower altitudes, although it does receive more influence from the Tanaro.

The 2016 vintage may go some ways to altering the perception of Barbaresco with many beautiful wines, although the same is true of Barolo from the limited samplings I’ve had.

Overall, I believe that the potential is there in terms of the quality of the vineyards with Asili and Rabaja and Paje all clearly capable of producing profound wines. Pajore, Montefico and Montestefano all have great potential, and , perhaps to a lesser extent Curra, Cotta, Gallina and (a sleeper but producing feminine wines with lovely floral qualities) Bassarin.
