Had a 5 last night. PnP, drank out of a decanter over the next five hours. Started with fresh, lifted red fruit. Noticeable, but not overwhelming tannins. With some time/air, it really fleshed out, and took on a darker fruit profile. It seemed to start Sonoma and end Napa. Wish I had been able to follow over a couple days, but either way this was a really nice wine and absolutely worth the price. Now, trying to decide whether to buy more.
This makes me laugh. ![]()
Had Lot 01 last night and completely agree with your assessment!
Stuck a coravin into Lot 24 tonight
First Impressions: Woah woah woah, this is good. Dense and layered, yet lifted and energetic. Walking the line between dark and red fruit. Everything in line and everything really pure, nothing out of place. Fine tannins. This is a seriously good wine.
Easily the best of the cam X wines iāve encountered (iāve only tried 35, 29, 28, 27, 7 and now 24 so take that as you will)
Lot 5 is good. Rich, but not overdone. Enough acid and tannin to hold things in check. Itās definitely a more alcohol driven wine but for people who like their wines big and hedonistic without being pruned, this is excellent. At $16 or whatever, ridiculous.
Follow up day 2 tasteā¦itās really chocolate-y awesome. I donāt need any more wines but so far, this is in my top 5 CamX cabs or cab blends with 25, then 27, then 5 vs 24 vs 7 (three way diff styles but all delicious).
Iāve only opened one bottle of lot 5 and that was maybe 3 weeks ago. I must be missing something because the bottle I had didnāt show well at all like you guys are all reporting. It was my least favorite so far but seeing these comments maybe I need to open another bottle soon to see if itās different than the first was.
I am a bit disappointed that I only have a 3 pack of lot 24 and I havenāt tasted it yet before it sold out.
Iām also surprised by all the praise for Lot 5. It was more enjoyable after a couple of days, but not much above mediocre. For me, Lots 1, 2 & 3 are all better than 5.
Wow, Iām surprised to hear ānot much above mediocreā but that could simply be a taste preference. Lot 1, 2 and 3 are much lighter styles than 5. 5 is probably bordering if not basically āBOOM BOOMā based on the pH and alcohol, even though the specs werenāt given.
And remember, lot 5 was just bottled in August, so a few extra weeks of bottle age should theoretically make a huge difference.
A friend drank her own bottle of lot 5 last week and loved it too, after a few hours of air.
BIG assumption that itās not barrel selected Les Pavots or other mix, but there is a funny CT review from maybe 2021 that says basicallyā¦āa bit expensive for what it is, but thatās california for youā. I think this is pretty much a universal true statement. More important than anything else, is donāt spend more than you want to, and if you can figure out which of Camās descriptions fit your palateā¦even better.
Yes, we part company on this one David, but we still have great appreciation for Pezzato in common!
Yeah, for me lot 1 was last of 12 wines. (And so far the only one I kinda wish I had never gotten.) So people that like 1 should not listen to my recommendations! It totally makes sense to me that if someone really likes 1 they will not like lot 5 (which was my favorite). Preferences are just really different.
Popped a Lot 5 today with coworkers (a bunch of wine bankers). Decanted for 2-3 hours in advance, in fridge. Started with a 21 ultamarine heintz, which was tasting great. Then for Lot 5, it was a bit awkward at first, wasnāt loving the mid palate and finish. 20 minutes later started to come together. By the end was tasting great. Pretty light in terms of tannin and structure. Didnāt get much heat but on riper side. Red fruited, almost more merlot than cab, or like cab lovers Pinot.
Had the lot 27 a few weeks back, tasted over 3 days, which had a lot more structure, tannin, dark fruit, but also quite drinkable. Was a big fan of 27. Both lots were great - just different profiles. Very happy with my purchases!
We enjoyed camās pinots over the past two nights. Lots 8 and 20.
Very different, both quite good in their distinctive ways. 8 is restrained, and classic.
20 is denser in texture and flavor palette, exuberant.
No real flaws in either.
Yum.
Lot 9 tonight. Light to medium body, light for a Chardonnay. I called it lemon peel, wifeāunripened plum. I was getting a very strong flinty/gunmetal note, like distractingly strong. Wife doesnāt notice it though.
Looked at camās notes after:
āMeyer lemon, lime leaf, white flowers, and beeswaxā
Definitely can get behind the first three, ironically, I put some edible flowers in the salad tonight, and we nodded at that one. Was scratching my head at beeswax, but wife just pulled out some royal jelly and we can really get behind that as well. Lastly, I would agree with Burgundian style.
Thoughts: I have no trouble believing this is a $55 wine. This is exactly the type of wine that I enjoy tasting at a nice winery, but would never buy, due to price point and style. Wife likes it more than me. Went well with our sea bass. Not something I would pop and pour without food.
I got it in the Thanksgiving sampler. Not in a hurry to buy more, but I guess I could see myself getting 3 more. (As I type, wife just found itās $13 and is lobbying for moreā¦)
Cam X Lot 24 2023 Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Picked up from the UPS access point today.
Poured about 1/3 of the bottle into the decanter and let sit for over an hour.
Dark concentrated ruby color.
Nose popping with boysenberry, violets, dusty white rock and oak. Fruit getting darker with air. Smooth and elegant structure.
This is a serious wine, competing with Lots 25 & 27 for favorite CamX. The bottle might be finished tonight, girlfriend loves it.
First bottle of our Lot 200 Napa Hillside 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon sitting outside at the fire pit before lunch with friends. Oh, they love retirement living in Portugal, but do miss American wines. Group consensus is that Lot 200 is truly a 94 point Cab Sauv wine, but could get even better in the next two+ years. A really nice chicken pot pie smothered in homemade kimchi followed for lunch accompanied with Lot 234 Russian River 2020 Pinot Noir. Strangely, the pairing was perfect with this PN holding its own against the spiced chicken presentation. No less than 92 pts for this Pinot Noir.
Agree. Lot 24 is very enjoyable indeed even with a mere 15 mins of release and occasional swirling in the glass. Didnāt need to bother with a decant. In fact, we enjoyed it far more on day 1 than on day 2. Go figureā¦
Lot 27 is our favorite Cam X red thus far.
Lot 24 also in our top 5.
We are drinking Lot 9 as I type. Young in the bottle however, the mouthfeel and QPR are superb.
