What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Two university of Miami graduates in the house so had to go with one of my favorite producers for the game tonight. Go Canes!

Hey ho!! Cousins of some of my best friends are now running Chateau de Malle, beginning with the 2022 vintage I believe? Lots of work to be done, but he was a lead winemaker at Chateau Guiraud, so watch out for some new and improved Chateau de Malle. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

WINES AT NICOLAS - (20/1/2026)

Visited Nicolas for the last time before the change of ownership at the end of the month, sad to see such an institution close. Two superb wines before I enter reservist for two weeks to serve the nation..

  • 2020 Domaine MĂ©o-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes-CĂŽtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-CĂŽtes de Nuits
Consistent with previous impressions. Rich yet incisive and vibrant citrus fruit. Well-judged acidity with some slight bitterness on the finish. Lovely texture, probably the best CdN white? (93 pts.)
  • 2016 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts - France, Burgundy, CĂŽte de Nuits, Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru
Smoky, spicy nose but was possibly influenced by cigar smoke nearby.. On first tasting, it was approachable but somewhat muted and simpler than expected. Agree with Dibbs’ observation that there may have been a mismatch between the relatively light extraction and the level of oak, definitely less concentrated than the previous generation of Malconsorts. Became more recognisably Cathiard with air with rich, supple dark cherry fruit and the slightest hint of sweetness. Perhaps still slightly lacking the depth and authority of earlier vintages but time will tell if this will age the same way. (93 pts.)

A very solid left bank Bordeaux, but nothing profound. Actually showed better last night, this second night it has closed down. I would probably give it a few more years if you have some.

Thanks. Looks painfully young based on colour.

The first 23 Chablis that I have seen. Has good density and sone exoticism on the nose but the palate has ripe acid and white stone fruits. There’s a fennel and sea spray note but it’s all nicely compact and has good build and cut. Very nice.

2015 Hirsch Raschen Ridge. Very earthy, drinking well.

How tannic was yours? I had one last week which I found painfully tannic still!

These Older Buisson-Charles are bullet proof. Dense and stacked, crÚme brûlée and bright Meyer lemon. The palate is chiseled and weighty. Fresh as a trout!

and the Olive Oil?

More viscousđŸŸ

Actually I ordered one bottle of the olive oil and when I received it , the invoice price was $650. For a bottle! I asked the supplier to review and pleased to say came in at a good deal less. It’s stunning oil, no phenolic, fresh green bean notes. We reserve it for our best leaves from the garden.

The tannins clamped down on day two! Was worth the check-in.

Adi Badenhorst Cinsault Ramnasgras 2017

Last bottle of this. The last time I had it, in 2022, I noted that this was light but not thin and from a texture perspective this still holds true. It’s lost a little fruit and it’s now drinking more on savoury flavors of dried herbs and tomato leaf. Enjoyable but not something it’d hold on to for much longer. I feel this could turn into leaf juice. Still enjoyable with sausage and lentils.

2022 Domaine de la Solitude, Pessac-Leognan, rouge.

Light purple/ruby.

Open: Fragrant mulberry, with slight reduction on the nose.
Med-Full bodied, good mouthfeel, med+ acidity.

Got going after about an hour, more raspberry, a hint of citrus and spices in the mid-palate. A long clear line of fruit, tannin, and baking spice that draws the finish out. Tannins are fine if a bit gravelly, and much more perceptible on the back palate.

1:30: fruitcake, cinnamon, cocoa powder.

2:00: A little out of balance, tannins pulling on the fruit rather heavily.

3:00: Freshness returning.

Summary: A very pleasant surprise! There is a lot of depth here for a wine that is so young, and it appears to have a decent bit of raw material to develop. Very happy to support the sisters of the convent on which the grapes are grown, and the Famille Bernard who make this wine.

:joy:

I mean yeah, basically.

I just want to know how many times a year a nun walks through the vineyard and just picks off grapes to eat, lol.

I posted the fallout from these bottles here

I brought two magnums to a friend’s retirement dinner.

2012 Bollinger La Grande Année.

Terrific wine. I actually liked this 6 months ago from a 750 more than this magnum. To my palate, the magnum was very early into its drinking window. Berries, pear, brioche and a touch of almond.

2014 Jean Foillard Morgon CĂŽte du Py.

From a magnum. Moderately herbal with dark cherries and berries. Some flinty and barnyard notes that I suspect came from a mix of light reduction and mild brett. The reduction element eased with air. My friends loved it.

at a friend’s wake. We opened about 40 bottles from his cellar. These were two favourites of the afternoon.

The 2004 Angerville has shed it 2004 green meanies and now has a forest floor mature burg profile. Actually pretty good. The Albert Mann was rocking with tons of dry extract, palate was deep and long. Both were fully mature and full of life (unlike the cellar owner!)

Sorry for your loss - it sounds as if you gave him a proper send off.
