I opened the 2000 forts de latour at Hawksmoor last month, it showed quite well, there was a hint of barnyard there, did you get that?
2022 Kelley Fox Weber Pinot.
Young but so delicious itâs hard to keep in the cellar.
Iâm not sure Iâd call it barnyard, although there was an earthy and maybe dry hay edge to it. If by âbarnyardâ you mean funk or horsey scents Iâd have to say no; if you mean more like hay bales Iâd say yes, there was a slight tinge of that, one that for me added to the experience.
best of the three.
Sitting here on day two with this bottle. This is pretty old school Bordeaux, a burly Lagrange. Still chewy, perhaps a few more years would be ideal. This is not necessarily an elegant wine, but Iâm finding it really enjoyable. Big bold, dark and spicy black fruits, dried earth with some scorch and smoke notes. Sweety and tangy fruits with definite spice. The perfume is classic Bordeaux even with its lovely hints of brett that makes some of you #snowflakes run for the hills! ![]()

Lovely mature St Em from a smashing vintage. Soft and round and deep. Kind of like a comfortable old sofa. Not the most complex wine but a pleasure to sip and enjoy
That makes some of us in America quite uncomfortable! ![]()
So the funny thing about this picture is Iâm at my friends drinking and having dinner on a Friday night. There are usually 6 to 10 of us, but sometimes there are three or four of us. They are 40 to 50 year wine people that I met when they moved down here from the Bay Area about a decade ago. For the last 30 years, heâs been buying cases upon cases of Aubert, Peter Michael, and Kistler Chardonnay. I donât think heâs bought a bottle of red wine in 30 years. The rest of us bring wines and always try to match red wine to the dinner. Sometimes at the end of the night, Joe will ask his wife, Sarah what else should I open and itâll almost always be some kind of Chardonnay. But every once in a while, sheâll say open something red. Heâll walk into the garage to the wine cabinet with red wine open it up and just grab something then he walked in and say is this OK?
itâs always OK. #87silveroakalexander always bought on release and always stored perfectly
Had some neighbours over. They had never tried Grange.
I served the 1988 Grange paired with a 1996 Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz. The wines were served blind and everyone had no difficulty identifying the Grange.
Distinctive Grange nose with what the Aussies called crushed ants, a spicy note, deep complex and long with layers and layers of flavour. Really long finish that went on and on. Even though it was decanted for 2 hours it needed another 2 hours in the glass to really show its best. 38 years young.
The 1996 Block 6 is a lovely old school McLaren Vale Shiraz. Fruit cake and spice and rich ripe fruits. Showing well at 30 years but needs to be drunk. Just a little two dimensional compared to the Grange
Last night was Champagne and Burgundy with a phenomenal omakase dinner at Michelin one star O by Brush. All of the wines were showing so well it would be hard to pick a favorite.
My last TN is April 2025:
Roupeiro, Rabo de Ovelha, AntĂŁo Vaz, Tamarez, Alicante Branco and Arinto. Old vines (going back to 1970). Around 30,000 bottles produced. Ripe citrus, dried apricots, hints of honeycomb and a little sea breeze going on. Good texture on the palate, concentrated with proper medium acidity and a long finish on salted hazelnuts. This punches above its pay grade. Glad I have a few remaining.
Now check the color:
Fitapreta Alentejano O Ancestral 2020
Beautiful golden tones and the profile agrees. I would have called well made Jura Chard+Savagnin blend with some age. This was an unexpected jolt to the heart: preserved lemon, slight caramel and nuttiness, hint of pear and lemony rocks. Perfect balance on the palate with an oily tongue coating presence yet a saline and acidic line cutting through. Long finish on tertiary notes. Just beautiful. I canât remember how much I paid for this but it wasnât enough. Great wine.
@Tomas_Costa I think youâre the reason I bought this. I owe you one.
@IlkkaL and @LasseK, any chance youâre hitting Montreal soon? I have one left
