What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Lighter and more restrained than I am used to with their zins. Don’t know if it was the year or maybe I just should drink these sooner because I do like them out of the gate very much. Saved a glass for tonight to see what becomes of it.

2022 Gradis’ciutta Friulano, Collio, Italy
A lot of tasty things happening in this wine. An intriguing and appealing blend of fruit over a substantial herb and mineral foundation. Also delivers the flavor package at full chill. I think this is my first Friulano; I hope to try more examples. This one is nice. ~$20

Both are still drinking a touch young. The Pride cab was the better of the two for the three of us, with the Larkmead not really identifyable as a Larkmead cab, if that makes sense. Like maybe the chosen block isn’t very representative of the vineyard as a whole?

The ‘19 and ‘20 Citrine were great with lots of lemon lime the Pax was feral and earthy, the Franny Beck had loads of strawberry and the Bouley was dark fruited and structured. Nice mix of styles.

4-6 year windows for me with their wine. I will drink the majority in the 4-5 year window and save a bottle to age 8-10 years.

Double decanted, back in the fridge an hour before drinking.

Don’t taste the high ABV on this. I assume all the air opened it up. Nice to get a little age on the bottle but will wait before opening another.

Tonight at LoS. Still a fantastic wine. Still got plenty of years ahead.

2012 Ch. Fonsalette. Beautiful complex nose of strawberries and raspberries, spice and flowers Deep complex layers and layers of flavour in the mouth. more red berry fruits, earth, white pepper and dried herbs. Smooth round tannins, moderate acidity. Long clean finish. Effortless power without weight. It is really a privilege to drink and a tribute to the Reynaud family skills and magic with Grenache. Yummy now but certain to age into something more complex with time

The Frank Bonville was good, but the Pol is a whole different level.

Made the mother in the house some breakfast and popped a lovely, maturing white Burg.

I love the color on those older Defaix you pop.

I’m curious how that worked with the bacon? Better than a young Chablis I’m sure.

I think the deeper more complex notes certainly played off better with the bacon, though I’ll be candid, I was hoping to pop a champagne, but for whatever reason that’s just not my wife’s jam.

lovely mature Graves
Opened hours before drinking - cork was in perfect condition
Old school in a good way. Mature dark fruits, cedar, and earthy, melted tannins and a long, elegant finish. Nice complexity and balance.

Love it. And the 1990 even better. I bet I’ve had 2+ cases of that 1990, but sadly, all gone now!

2018 RM Summa
2021 Antica Terra Botanica

Both great, but the Botanica was such an epic bottle of wine, totally eclipsed the RM, completely in a different league and one of the best bottles of Pinot I’ve ever had. With 2 left and as much as I’d like to cellar them, it’s so good now they probably won’t live to see 2026.

Still powerful, better with a couple hours in the decanter
