2020 Domaine Du Pelican Cuvee Brut S. Sparkling wine made from 100% savagnin, disgorged after 13 months. Really nice sparkling wine, we had the 2018 at a restaurant and bought a few bottles of the 2020. Flint, white flowers, tropical fruit. The pricing is a bit all over but we paid $40 for this. Would recommend at that price. This is mostly for my partner as I’m doing a dryish Jan.
Served with our last wheel of Rush Creek Reserve (that I learned about on here!).
Picked up for almost nothing at auction, the 2010 Ridge Buchigani Ranch Carignane was a real surprise. Delicious wine that I think is regularly overlooked.
Not your grocery store Chianti, although there is a place for those too. This Gran Selezione with some bottle age, and has “smoothed out” in a good sense. Softly belts out a pleasant range of notes. Think Luciano Pavarotti, not Louis Prima.
Château Closiot C de Sec 2022
I’m really on the fence on this one. Not sure if I like it or don’t. However, I think time could be good to this and I’d be interested in trying it with 5 to 7 years more.
True yellow in color with maybe a slight golden hue. The Sémillon is showing on the nose but there was more additional exotic ripe fruits than I’m used to. The Muscadelle maybe? Very rich, perfumed, exotic nose with some vanilla peaking through. Big palate, lots of fruit, rich and good length. So, lots of aromatics and richness but it remains dry overall with good citrusy acidity coursing through. The vanilla is a little out of place and the richness from the fruit a little too in your face. This was my only one but I’ll look for a bottle with some age on it to see how it evolves.
2017 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc
This bottle was in a very nice place. Subdued lemon fruit and herb. Beautifully balanced.
A glass and a half with dinner of freshly shucked oysters (Wellfleet & Chebooktook) and pan seared/oven finished halibut with a lemon-butter sauce and carrots as the side. Very yum! We will finish the bottle with a chevre-based cheese plate on Sunday.
Moderation, folks!
2021 Domaine des Amphores Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes Les Iris
Wine like this, to quote JLL, is What One Wants (WOW)! And @$14 a btl! Alert!
Black cherry color. Quickly forming and falling legs. Blackberry, violets, woodstock, and other “stuff.” Had with steaks. Over time, the tannins smooth with air and the berry notes become more buoyant.

The 2022 Domaine des Amphores Syrah “Les Iris” is from vines in Chavanay, just outside the Saint-Joseph zone, tended organically since planting, in the early 90’s, and now certified Biodynamic as well.
Had dinner last night at Jules@Market in Bristol PA with my friends Harry C and Beth Sh. Beth brought this amazing Gewurz from the Pfalz. The best I’ve had in ages and I’ve never heard of it. Lychee and Roses!
Much improved since my last bottle two years ago. Deep, floral aroma with some toasty notes. Dark fruit on the palate with ample acidity and a freshness which makes this both structured and charming at the same time. Feels like this has the capacity to improve even further. Much admir’d!
2014 Reynvaan Stonessence picked up for 50% off at auction. I don’t know why these are passed over so often, but wow this is one hell of a syrah. Just enough funk to let you know it’s got some Rocks fruit in it, but not overwhelming and still pleasing for those more sensitive to the funk. Just an outstanding, super solid syrah at a great price second hand.
Domaine Marius Delarche, 1er Cru “En Caradeux” (2011) - lychee, lemon curd, vanilla inflected pastry, silky with plenty of acidity, hint of flint on the end. Really enjoying this!
