What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Not for the first time, you get better deals in the US on some wines! I’d happily buy some at 30 euros. Their other wines are cheaper so I’ll certainly try some.

My last professional offer direct from the domaine was e25 HT…

L’Anglore Chemin de La Brune 2018
Marzipan and honeymelon, with a touch of stewed fruits. Toned down acidity and tannins. Fun bottle for the price.

2016 Walter Scott Ex Novo Chardonnay. I was rooting around in the cellar, and noticed that I had several bottles of this, and why not? Smoky, lemon, green apple, nutty, with great concentration and a long finish. Over time, the smoke subsided and the lemons and walnuts took over. This is in a really good place right now. I suspect it will hold for at least another 4-5 years, but why wait?

Not the best vintage but Charvin elegance comes through again.

Gorgeous Pinot Noir.
I’m always amazed how well Arcadian wines age. I have one more bottle of this and will hold on to it for another couple of years.
My Arcadian supply is dwindling, which makes me sad.

Thank you for posting this as I have been eyeing my lone bottle wondering when to open and this clinched it. You nailed it as it was a great mature BdM with the earthy/leathery notes balancing the cherry fruit. Wonderful with wife’s eggplant parm.

happy to be of service! Glad your bottle showed well.

Still youthful but very easy to love. Very refined and silky and all red fruits. Delicate but plenty of intensity and depth. Got to love Mugnier’s village Chambolle!

Domaine Maynard Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge 2022

This is restoring my faith in the Appellation. Southern Rhone used to be our benchmark in the early stages of our wine journey, but we drifted apart over time. Too many clumsy, gloopy bottles, too much alcohol, too many appealing alternatives.

15% alc. but it doesn’t feel like that at all. Roses, strawberries and herbs on the nose, lifted, light and mineral on the palate. Medium acidity, long finish. Not necessarily representative for the AOC (maybe it’s 10% Cinsault), not unlike Envinate’s Mencias. I will be back for more.

Guillot — Auguste 2014. Might be the worst “stemware” ever, but it doesn’t hide the fact that the wine showed like it wanted. Sour cherries, strawberry, lingonberry and generally a tart element. Slight brett and otherwise towering acidity. Can lay another 10 years easy. Great stuff.

You served Guillot to your dog?? Lucky dog!

Unbeknownst to being frontrunned, I also opened a wine from Julian:

Excellent and on an upwards trajectory from my last few bottles…

Nice! I will maybe add his wines to my cellar if I can get a good price. You definitely got me curious for the whites.

2011 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Reserva Rioja

This was one of those bottles when you find out if you really love Rioja or just have been spoiled with the trophy examples from time to time. Not that this was in any way bad, far from it — but it was not the Gran Reserva and it was from a fairly tough (hot, tannic) vintage. And I know now that I just love Rioja. This was satisfying and completed a meal beautifully.

From CT note:

Restaurant pnp. Stiff tannins at first; decanting preferred at the current time. More acid than I expected given vintage. Leather, tobacco, tomato leaf, raspberry. I guess it’s a step below the Gran Reserva (although I haven’t ever tasted the two wines in the same vintage side by side) — compared to the GRs I have had, this was a little less refined. But the power is more or less the same as far as I can tell/recall. Plenty of life ahead of it.
