Another great Riesling from @Adam_Frisch.

I pulled the rest of this 2 days later and it still drinks really well. The berries are more ripe and it traded some bright acidity for a little more depth. Quite nice!

Château Pierre-Bise - Savennières Roches aux Moines 2018

Crushed rocks and honeysuckle on the nose, then a very impressive attack of lemon and white peach, very crisp and refreshing, morphing into some apple and pear - so far so good - then wham, the finish: hot, hitting the back of the throat. Weird, I thought, until I turned the bottle and noticed that it had 15% ABV. The second sip confirmed that on its own, especially on an empty stomach, it wasn’t for me. With food, or after a meal, it was OK. But what a waste of a great terroir.
I just cannot understand what induced them to produce that sort of wine - of course, Joly has been doing it for years, but seriously? A white wine with 15% ABV? Especially a Savennières! That’ll teach me to be more careful before buying.

2014 Sugrue Pierre The Trouble With Dreams

There are some nice wines coming out of the South of England now, but in general still overpriced. I’d say this is an exception as at the price point it stands up very well against its counterparts across the channel. Always a crowd pleaser to start of with and always the same surprise when I reveal it as English.

2002 Frederic Magnien Chambolle Musigny VV. Jero.
Dusty, ripe red berries, wood, tobacco.
A very heavy wine, that has now started it’s trip to beyond the hills…
Bricky color, but still alive otherwise. Just a bit clumsy.

2015 Jamet CdR, 2015. Sourced from @LasseK
Super beautiful bottle. Dark, velvety and full of life.
Mint, only ever slightly barnyard’ish and full of red fruits. Tobacco, leather and the superlatives could go on and on. Maybe one of the highest QPR wines out there?!

NV Tissot Macvin Blanc
My wife’s a macvin fiend, so i’ve stocked up heavy on this, but thank god i did, because every time i open one, it’s gone in two seconds. Having tasted macvins in many different styles, this is one that’s very very classic and without any fuss. Raisins, good acidity to sugar level, not too oaky, christmas spices at a decent level. Just nice with some cheese at the end of the night.

We had some friends over last night and I spent quite a bit of time cooking. My wife chastised me for not taking pictures of the finished product but considering she also owns a smartphone, who’s to blame?

Anyways, it was lamb 3 ways: seared marinated loins with cream sauce, Moroccan inspired kefta (ras el hanout, fresh herbs) with homemade tzatziki and oven-baked shanks in papillotes with garlic and rosemary. I served this with aligot, green beans and oven dried tomatoes.

Philipponnat Royale RĂŠserve Non DosĂŠ
Disclaimer: we sell this wine.
I’m generally not a big fan of Philipponnat wines but I ended up liking this quite a bit! 67% PN, 31% Chard and 2% Meunier. 2019 base. 34% reserve wines in oak. Disgorged 02-2023.
Rich autolytic nose with bready and nutty aromas followed by pineapple and citrus. The palate is incisive which contrasts the nose but it fills up on the mid-palate with ripe citrus fruit. The bright acidity follows through all the way to the finish. This is more citrusy acidity than mineral. I can see this champagne being polarizing: you’ll either like it or won’t. This worked really well with homemade bread and anchoïade.

Château de Chamirey Mercurey 1er Cru La Mission Monopole 2018
This was very enjoyable: citrus, lemon curd, some tropical fruits (pineapple mainly), white flowers and a little vanilla. The palate is nicely balanced but more-ish: plenty of acidity, plenty of body with good texture and a medium plus finish on citrus, crushed stones and vanilla cream.

Château Cablanc Les Murailles 2013
The front label was completely worn off by humidity. Good honest Bordeaux drinking at peak right now. I wouldn’t let this age much longer.

Château Grand-Puy Ducasse 2016
One year since the last note. Red berries, plums, torrefaction and a lot of freshness coming from the slate/pencil lead finish. What I found missing one year ago is complexity that should come with age. It’s still pretty compact right now. Good wine.

Not enough information.
Blanc or Rose? There is no wrong answer, both are fine.

Sorry - RosĂŠ.

I’ve had some awful luck with wines recently. Just a string of bad bottles and/or renditions. An oxidized Silvaner, a couple of South African Syrah’s that were terrible, a Gamay that I had to pour out, etc etc.

Ever get into these bad luck streaks that last 5+ bottles?
