What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Stuff from the last couple of days:

Disclaimer: we sell this.
Françoise Bedel Entre Ciel & Terre
Something was off: bubbles were disappearing at the speed of light and the wine was too evolved. Sad.

Roséfine 2022
A friend brought this over. Decent rosé. I wasn’t offended.

Gabin et Félix Richoux Irancy Les Cailles 2018
This was a succulent Pinot Noir. Feels like Côtes de Nuits: darker berries, spices and the structure to back it up. The fruit is a little ripe but that’s probably the vintage talking. Enough minerality on the finish to keep this fresh. We went through the bottle like a hot knife through butter. Good.

Vincent Bachelet Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Vieilles Vignes 2015
This definitely felt Côtes de Beaune after the Irancy. Red berries, dried herbs (stemmy) and dry earth. This was still rather primary. Lots of freshness and good structure that could keep this going. No rush to drink this. Good.

Sancerre Jean Reverdy Les Villots 2022
OK. Late at night so iffy tasting notes. This was floral, red fruited and vibrant. Seemed like a good QPR which fits with why I bought this.

Éléonore Mystère 9
Disclaimer: we sell this.
Damn good. Seriously. This is just a very good bottle of wine. Complex, layered with enough acidity to hold it all together and the chalky freshness on the finish. This is my favorite Éléonore champagne.

Louis Michel Grenouilles 2021
Wow. Exactly what I want out of this. Oodles of crushed oyster shells and ripe yellow fruits intermingling. This is eerily approachable now! I’m not sure how I’ll keep away from the other bottles to let this age.

With no necker, what vintage of Louis Michel?

Yeah, no doubt, and interesting, as much as I drink this domain, I’ve actually never heard of or seen this bottling.

Probably the hardest one to find. I always buy Montee de Tonnerre.

2019 Roumier Chambolle - Musigny. We had this at Club Chasse et Peche in Montreal, which once again provided not just an excellent meal but a joyous occasion. We have been there a few times and the servers have invariably been wine geeks. Ours was so enthusiastic about the Roumier that we left him a good taste at the end. In reply, he very generously let me try a Macvin de Jura (as in, a full pour) that intrigued me but wasn’t going to go with my dessert. And that was a real treat.

From CT review:

Restaurant setting. Excellent Chambolle perfume of cherry, raspberry and violet that only intensified with air. Touches of iron or meat on the palate as well, along with sweet spice. Tremendously powerful without being at all heavy: tannins are not yet fully resolved, and it still has some young boisterousness to it. For all that, it was also astonishingly versatile, marrying well with scallops, then with lobster and artichokes, finally with venison loin and short rib - I can’t think of too many wines that could do that. Very enjoyable; still on the ascent. Needless to say with Roumier, easily transcends its level.

That is my go-to bottling as well

Argh sorry! I forgot to add the pic title. It’s 2021.

Not overblown, and gaining in depth over the last 12 months. ***1/2 with upside.

We had a half decent 2020 Humagne for lunch in Lausanne. I didn’t take a pic or write-down the domaine though.

Back at home tonight for Galettes Bretonnes (my wife takes care of those) and cider for the suckers, wife and kids, and, leftover filet mignon and homemade pasta with Roquefort sauce for me.

I finished the red Sancerre from the previous night while the ladies were having cider and then we uncorked a few bottles.

Maurice Choppin Les Arpents
Disclaimer: we sell this wine.
85% PM, 10% Chard and 5% PN. This is a producer we really like and export to the US. Dosage of 2g/l and disgorged on July 12th 2023.
Crazy deep golden color and onion peel on this. The nose is very expressive with sweet cherry, baked apple and sweet spices (cinnamon, cardamom). The palate is rich but balanced with the freshness coming from minerality and bitterness. Long mineral finish. Lovely wine.

Domaine des Roches-Neuves Thierry Germain Saumur Champigny Franc de Pieds 2016
I let my friend scan the cellar and pick. She’s a big Loire Cab Franc nut and these are hard to find in Quebec. So we opened my last 2016. Too cold from the cellar initially but still clean and proper once opened. Time brought out all the good stuff: cherry, cranberries, earth, red florals and just a hint of green bell pepper. Delicate palate, good acidity, fine tannins on the finish and just so much fruit and freshness. This bottle was also full of lovely crushed stones on the nose and finish. Very good.

2011 Evening Land Vineyards Meursault 1er Cru Blagny

Why do I own this? Where did it come from? Why does it even exist?

I had low expectations when I uncovered this bottle over the weekend but figured I’d give it a shot with dinner tonight.

I’m blown away. It’s excellent, and drinking perfectly right now. Ripe orchard fruits with a lovely balance of richness and acidity.

Last week:

Yesterday:

The magnum of ‘94 Elyse Howell Mtn Zinfandel was just good, nothing more. The bottle of 2007 Scherrer cab was deliciously mature but not over the hill. Still haven’t had a Scherrer cab (or zin) that was too old to be pleasurable.

2021 Dom. Bernard Baudry Le Clos Guillot Chinon

Herb, raw veggies, bursts of fresh firm berries with intense red-fruit acidity and gentle mineral notes. Lasts forever. Outta the ballpark Clos Guillot.
For the vintage, ranks just behind the powerful 2021 Croix Boissee.

A member of our local wine group is moving to Portland, so we had to have a farewell celebration on Monday. I wasn’t able to give my full attention to all the wines as I was in charge of dinner, but I was particularly attentive to the Champagne and the whites before I got busy.

2004 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses - Very clean and fresh, somewhat relaxed mousse. Brioche, lemons, very well balanced.

2015 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet “Clavoillon” - For me, this was the star of the show. Some smoke/gunflint, lemon curd, granny smith apple, nutty, concentrated and intense, great mid-palate, balance and length. A great wine hitting on all cylinders.

2017 Henri Germain Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Fairendes” - A new producer for me, and a unfamiliar vineyard (part of Morgeot). Lemons, citrus, a little fuzzy, an excellent wine, but lacked some of the concentration of the other two whites.

2014 PYCM Criots-Batard Montrachet - A first for me. I’ve had multiples of the other Montrachets, but I had missed this one until now. Similar to the Leflaive with respect to reduction, but oak was still very evident. Very good depth and concentration, excellent midpalate and finish. I don’t know if I learned anything about the vineyard from this wine, since it just tasted like a standard PYCM wine, just slightly more concentrated than his village efforts.

I was busy with dinner and conversation when we got to the reds, but Doug Tunnell brought a magnum of his 2005 Brickhouse Pinot Noir Dijonnais that was magnificent. Concentrated, complex, with all the rough edges sanded down. Just a complete wine that kept calling you back for another sip.

Thanks to Mike, Andy, Marcus and Megan, and Doug for supplying the wine. I have to admit to feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday!

Thursday evening with a long weekend ahead so coravin for a couple of nice glasses
2005 Malescot
Mmmmm this gets better as it sits and airs in the glass. Dark strawberries with strong tannins and a silky finish. Kind of like drinking powerful flowers. I’ll finish with a mate tomorrow but this has ages left and I have three to go

I just replied to you on your cellartracker note :grinning:

“Agree, this really needs treating properly. I bought a case and the first bottle I had I wasn’t too impressed and then the next couple I just opened in a large group as a party wine, without much care. However the 4th bottle I had, I decanted very early, gave it hours of air and it was really gorgeous. I’ll keep the next 2 for a bit yet.”

  • 2020 Domaine des Marnes Blanches Cotes du Jura Chardonnay En Quatre Vis

It’s young coiled but yet absolutely delicious. Lemon oil, peach, green apple and a hint of nuttiness on the finish all wrapped together with electric acidity! With a can of fatty tuna belly it’s just wow. Pretty sure it will be even better in a few years. Thanks to @LasseK and who says Jura sucks

Beauty and the beast and the other beast

  • 2021 Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis Vent d'Ange - France, Burgundy, Chablis (5/27/2024)
Superlight, a pleasant fizz that hangs in there, lemon-meets-chalk. 13% Alc. Delicious.

Is it “classic” Chablis ([whatever THAT is these days](https://www.wineberserkers.com/t/raveneau-alternatives/322453/33)), I dunno.
Do I like it? YES. (92 points)
  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru (5/27/2024)
    Floral, almost alcoholic nose.
Big black cherry fruit, savory, dense, landing on the chocolate or licorice end of the taste spectrum; briary-salty med+ tannic spine and med acids peeking out from underneath it all. 14% Alc.
A hedonistically extroverted beast at this point, but has the stuffing to evolve positively. (94 points)
  • 2014 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (5/27/2024)
Grippy tannins and med acids balancing black fruits. 13.5% Alc.
By night 2 (on Coravin), this settled down to a balanced and more mellow and delicious Chambolle.
Nice, and plenty of years in the tank. Seems like Sentiers = stiffer backbone = needs more time than other parts of Chambolle to integrate (92 points)
