Started with cheese and ’03 Dirler Grand Cru Muscat from Alsace. The nose on this wine was so beautiful we spent a long time just smelling it. White flowers, jasmine and gardenia with orange peel and some rose water. It is always a little disappointing to taste something that smells this good, the taste did not compare. It was good but the rubbing alcohol on the end took away. Intriguing wine none the less. ’08 Domaine du Salvard Delaille- Loire white imported by Kermit Lynch. Had a pure Sauvignon Blanc nose and good acid. Steely lime and mineral. I will buy this again for $15. ’07 Siduri Rosellas Pinot- Some oak showing on the nose at this young age. Enjoyable pure pinot. It will be fun to check out the rest of the bottle tonight.
New York steaks, garlic mashed potatoes(garlic and yukons from the garden), grilled zuchinni(from the garden) and salad. ’06 Alesia Syrah- Fairview Ranch SLH. This wine changed a lot over the night. It went from Herbes de Provence to vanilla and blackberry. Very enjoyable. ’07 Big Basin Syrah- Fairview Ranch Started with some tar and raspberry on the nose and changed into teriyaki, beef jerkey. Full and round and as I said last night, “One of my WOTN”. Fun to compare the 2 Syrahs from the same ranch different producers, diferent year and very different wines. ’06 Andromeda Pinot Sean Thanckery-First opened up with raspberry, kind of dark for Pinot. The nose got a bit muted. We are looking forward to checking this wines evolution tonight.
Closed it down with a sticky and back to the cheese. ’07 Navarro Riesling Cluster Select Late harvest. Ripe peach nectar.
A lot of WOTN’s for Kimberly as she was in usual form.
The '03 Alsace Muscat was a lot of fun to smell with a very flower water and perfume character. Unfortunately the palate was basically like dilute flower water with no finish.
I like the Delaille Cheverny was a very good bottle of Sauv Blanc. Clean and balanced, bright acidity and minerals. A bargain.
The Siduri Rosella’s had a lot of rich packed fruit. Did come off as a bit woody right now though. Should have the bones to let that wood integrate better I would think.
The 06 Alesia Fairview Ranch was a big surprise to me as it was far different from the 05. This was much bigger and came off as more extracted to me but still showed a great herbal character. This is going to need a lot more time in bottle to me but might appeal more broadly than did the 05.
In sharp contrast to the Alesia was the Big Basin which was in a bigger Cali style showing lot’s of cracked pepper character later on. Both Fairview Ranch’s were very good but very different.
The Thackery was an odd wine all around. Hard to identify as Pinot initially or even later on for that matter. A note of brett came out as well keeping this under wraps. The Thackery wines always seem to be an adventure.
A couple Navarro stickies came out later on. Sweet and sappy with the ‘select’ bottling having better acidity. Those will get more reports later this week as they are residing in the fridge barely touched.
Good to know the lad continues his adventures…and is drinking moderately well…and moderating his commentary, requiring exhausting reading between the lines…
