We are meeting up with other families for a week in Lake Tahoe in early July. We’ll be flying into Sacramento and stocking up at the local Costco. Others will be coming up from Phoenix. Since my nearest Costco is 1.5 hrs away I am not as up on their inventory as I used to be.
Those of you from AZ/CA/NV, what recent Costco purchases would you recommend ? I’m looking for everyday drinkers suitable for grilling out/salmon/pasta, etc. No wines in need of cellart time.
thanks !
Hi Jan, the deal with Costco is that each store has its own inventory, when it comes to special wines, otherwise their everyday selection is nothing special and prices are competitive with wine stores.
I don’t buy reds from Costco, unless there’s some special deal on Bordeaux. A white that I like a lot and they carry it around $16 is Treana a nice blend of some whites.
Treana is my discovery - never forget it, Otto!!
You’d like it, Jan, and of course I know this because our palates are so aligned. The Rhone selection can be nice - they almost always have Coudoulet de Beaucastel (2004 for sure, possibly also 2005), and several Perrin bottlings.
Absolutely, Treana is a great deal and a great white rhone blend.
Most Costco’s also have the best $11 Cabernet you’ll find anywhere.
06 Louis M Martini Cab - Sonoma County
It’s not going to blow your mind but it’s decent and won’t blow the budget.
If you want to spend a little more, most also carry Napanook and the Modavi Oakville Cab (as well as the cheaper Mondavi Napa Valley Cab).
I will NEVER acknowledge that in writing!!! [1928_middle_finger.gif]
I love this wine, but it isn’t at our Costco. So it costs a few $ more whenever I do find it locally.
Add this to the list of things not at my local Costco, at least not as of last week when I was there. But I got it elsewhere for $12.
Thanks guys. I’ve had the Treana a few times back in my Phoenix days and always liked it.
Otto, I’ve had the same experience with red wines at Costco of late. The few times I’ve been there I haven’t seen that much of interest. I will give the Martini Cab a try. That would fit in with our dining/drinking plans.
Todd - I’ll look for the Beaucastel and Perring bottlings as well.
