My 2003 bottles and older do not say “second” but that’s now present even on their website, presumably to connote second growth.

I wonder when that started.

They do still make it in France, don’t they?

It’s a French word too. Second/seconde, in this case second cru.

This is one wine I wish I had more of in my meager stash, more from a variety of vintages.

Learn something every day, and thank you Craig for setting me straight. IN several trips to France and through 3 years of French (albeit French I three times – elementary, secondary, and college!) I never saw the word “second” or “seconde” used. Always deuxieme. I wondered if this was just a (very) modern loan from English, but it turns out the opposite is true.
