Learn something every day, and thank you Craig for setting me straight. IN several trips to France and through 3 years of French (albeit French I three times – elementary, secondary, and college!) I never saw the word “second” or “seconde” used. Always deuxieme. I wondered if this was just a (very) modern loan from English, but it turns out the opposite is true.
