I picked the Blue Point up as a local entry. It was the lightest of the three. It almost tasted sweet after the Racer. However, it was also the cheapest at $2.99, I think.
Racer’s beers are just too hoppy for me, the Red Rocket sadly included. I would imagine damned near anything would seem sweet after that.
Since it has been up for discussion today. Had to open one:
Bear Republic Red Rocket. Considering I don’t really do IPA’s, I am always surprised that hops in these reds don’t bother me. Maybe the substantial malt presence in these beers that balances the hops out…to me anyway. I love this beer. Rich and powerful, yet easy to drink.
Earlier…Rogue American Amber: Didn’t wow me…was bitter, but didn’t seem like it was from the hops. Not sure what the think. Would have been good otherwise.
I agree with Josh, I have had the Racer 5 as well and so far those two have been very hoppy.
Having the Ballast Point Calico Amber Ale this evening. Pretty good stuff. A touch of a cereal note and some mild floral hop driven aromas. Quite thick and creamy (and, incidentally, an unshaken bottle overflowed when popped and then poured with a huge head). Ample finishing bitterness reminds you this is an American beer, but I’m ok with that as it doesn’t push too far for my tastes. Quite dry, which I also appreciate.
Not too far from Boont Amber and Red Seal overall, but definitely a bit more body, a bit more cereal aromas, a bit more bitterness and perhaps less hop driven aromas. I’ll happily drink this beer on tap going forward, but I’d still rather have a 6 pack of Boont Amber or Red Seal than a couple of bomber of this in the fridge.
Another double red. A little too much for me. That is big and barley like. Not bad not not suited towards my tastes.

Red Seal…wow, this is fantastic! Might have surpassed the Bell’s Amber as my favorite amber. Super smooth and just a joy to drink.
Had a bottle of the Bear Republic – Red Rocket Ale yesterday. I liked it; very hoppy for a red/amber ale, but the ample maltiness made it obvious that it wasn’t an IPA or heavily-hopped Pale Ale. The maltiness came across as similar to that which I find in some of my preferred Brown Ales. Overall, this wasn’t too sweet, had lots of hops, and had a nice - almost refreshing - crispness to it.
Diamond Knot Brewing - Slane’s Irish Style Red. Great malt and caramel flavor and good hop balance. Head retention could have been better.
North Coast is the real deal. Probably my favorite domestic brewery the last couple of years, the whole lineup is excellent though I’m not that big on the Blue Star wheat beer but I’m not big on any wheat beers any more.
This week has been fun, and I appreciate everyone trying, but I think I just won. This beer is actually RED. Or should I say, PINK.
That picture doesn’t do justice to the fucked up sickly salmon color of this glass of beer?

What did you think of it Josh?? It’s a weird brew, for sure. Had it once…took me about 10 ounces before I decided I liked it - but super interesting.

but wasn’t sure on that one. Good note, sums it up. If you can find the Oskar Blues Gordon you will find it to be very similar. Also the Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster, but that is an east coast brew.
I still like wheat beers, so I will have to find the Blue Star!
