Weekend Wines (incl. a 2004 non-sucky Red Burg)

On Christmas night we were unexpectedly entertaining old family friends who had an emergency visit to town. So with beef stew we had the following:

2006 A Donkey and Goat Three Thirteen - USA, California (12/28/2009)
Soft, rich and lovely cherry and earth aromatics. Palate continues cherry, earth and minerals, with resolved tannins. I think this will be even better in 1-2 years’ time. Right now? Very good to excellent.

For dessert we made an apple-quince crumble served with Sauternes.
2001 Château Roûmieu-Lacoste Cuvée André - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (12/28/2009#
Scent of honey and flowers and obvious botrytis. Sweet apricots and honey on the palate and a delicious, almost zingy, aftertaste. This is a very fine and more than respectable beverage - it’s well-made and from a great vintage. Excellent.

Last night we finished off the Sauternes with friends after a chinese hot pot with the following wines. Both went very well with the hot pot. The La Roque was surprisingly youthful and fruity.

2004 Domaine Rene Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin #12/28/2009#
Signs of leakage on the capsule and label! Upon opening there was a slightly foul smell, but with a vigourous decant a rather nice bouquet emerged - red berries and spice. Very tight and acidic at first, but within an hour opening up with gorgeous red fruits and spice. This is the best 2004 red burgundy I’ve tasted. It has future potential if there are no green meanies lurking in other bottles! Very good.

2000 Château La Roque Coteaux du Languedoc Pic St. Loup Cuvée les vieilles vignes de Mourvedre - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc Pic St. Loup #12/27/2009)
Nice aromas of cut tobacco and dark fruits. On the palate fresh dark cherry, earth and cigar. Very youthful with a nice finish. Excellent.
