Weekend wines: a Oregon Pinot and Beaujolais

Dinner with friends over the weekend and I brought these 2 bottles. The pinot for an aperatif and the Beaujolais for the meal. We had a delicious lamb curry.

2010 Dois Irmãos Winery Pinot Noir
I think I’ve read some negative reviews about this wine(ry) in the past, but this bottle was decently quaffable for $14. It was light and fruity and the alcohol didn’t spike for me which I’m quite sensitive too.

2005 Potel-Aviron Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes
This was killer for me. Quite dark for a Beaujolais. I found it silky with excellent fruit. It may have just seemed heavier because of the lightness of the Dois, but I really enjoyed this bottle. I opened one about 1.5 years ago and it wasn’t ready then. The tannins have smoothed out and the fruit is singing. If you have any in your cellar I suggest opening it now or mailing them to me since this was my last one. [cry.gif]

Enjoy your mondays!

Interesting Portuguese name for an Oregon PN (translates to two sisters)…

Sorry, irmãos means brothers.

Nice notes. The Beaujolais sounds great.

Welcome John. Interesting choice of first TNs to post. Yet another unknown (to me) OR PN producer. Can they still be sprouting up like weeds? Decent PNs < $20 are a tough find.

Stephane Aviron was pouring at LaPaulee last year and he was largely being ignored by the throngs of Burgheads. Shame, because his 09s were quite tasty. I’d have to imagine there’s fine quality in that MaV and it’s probably just entering its drinking window.

Dois Irmaos is the negociant label of the two sons of the Coelho family.

The 2008 version fueled a large, multipage controversy here mainly because when sold as a Garagiste ‘mystery’ wine, it was strongly implied by Rimmerman to be a bottling of the 2008 Coelho estate wine, which when information was received from multiple sources (including one of the brothers) turned out to be entirely false. There were some alarming details (later deleted) on the wines genesis from someone claiming to be personally involved. The 2008 has multiple negative reviews here and on cellartracker.

These are the first comments i’ve seen on the 2010, and to date I have heard nothing wrt it’s origins. But based on the history, i’ll continue to pay $4-5 more for a WV wine from someone I trust (eg. Westrey, Evesham Wood) until these guys establish a little more of a history of success.

Thanks for the note on the beaujolais though. Sounds interesting.
