Week1 - Virtual Tasting for Charity - Now through Dec 3rd - You pick the wine, you pick the Charity!

If it had a tad more fruit I’d say wait 5 years. My thought is that it may not develop all that much more. Nicely integrated tannins, great structure.

Very enjoyable today, but if you prefer to take a chance of deeper tertiary notes give it a few years.

I am going for the trifecta of a story, picture and note. Apologies in advance if it is too lengthy.

Thanksgiving was bittersweet for us. We go to my parents, who live close to San Francisco Airport, about an hour away from where we live. I know that I am very fortunate to still have both parents at my age, and every day I am grateful for it, but my father’s health has been declining for the last few years, and especially this year. So we cherish being able to spend some time with them, whether it is a good day or not-so-good day. We bring sparkling wine for my Mom to mix with Orange Juice, and a decent red or 2 for dinner for my brother and his wife, and my wife. I am the DD when we go over there, so nothing for me.

Which brings me to today. Today is the day for putting the tree up, the stockings around the fireplace, the lights up outside, etc., since my wife’s sister and family are coming tomorrow. All done. Also, watching football. My wife’s family on both sides are from Columbus, and most are Ohio State Alums, so my wife is happy because her relatives are happy that the Buckeyes won. Our daughter attended Oregon, and we went to several games at Autzen, so she is happy that the Ducks won.

After all this, it will be some comfort food for dinner. And I wanted a bottle of wine that was not likely to disappoint me. And so we opened a 2014 Ridge Geyserville. There is a bit of sediment from the first pour, so we ran it through a funnel. This wine is lush, with a dark color and no lightening at the edges, and full of bramble, spice, plum and a mint/eucalyptus flavor that reminds me of the Ravenswood Dickerson Zins from the early 90’s. This wine is medium bodied, and extremely smooth and balanced. If you have any of these, I think that they will continue to drink well for at least the next 8-10 years. This is a superb wine and I look forward to having it with dinner tonight. Here is a picture from the initial pour.

Thanks to @brigcampbell for putting this together again this year and for everyone who have posted so far. Cheers!

Burg Krewe has to represent on this thread. I’ve been taking a cue from the Good Doctor @MChang and drinking my newly released Burgs earlier for the luscious fruit before they go sullen for awhile.

Tonight was a 2022 Emmanuel Rouget Nuits St. Georges. Surprisingly open for the producer. Deeper plummy fruit but silky mouthfeel. Nothing rustic here. Maybe finish is a bit short but this is solid village wine from a producer who makes unfussy, sexy wines.

50lbs? Wow! That is amazing (assuming you have a big freezer)!

50lb of seafood sounds a lot but half of the weight is shell since the mantis shrimp and conch are shell-heavy so it’s pretty compact. Whenever my family visits we have 8 50lb/23kg pieces filled with loose leaf tea, matcha, snacks and frozen seafood, and our freezer can hold like 150lb of seafood but they are too good I never get to test it out.

Strawberry, watermelon, pink grapefruit, great mineral spine.

Very floral, juicy lemon, medium bodied, round but not flabby, citrussy but not overly acicic, universally enjoyed by the table.

Scherrer was brambly, structured, round ripe berries, angled acid and tannins. Super good.

Bedrock was how I remembered it from pick-up day a year ago. Great floral nose, expressive bright juicy purple fruit, loads of structure, fantastic!

Sleight of Hand pretty electric purple. Nose is boysenberry, red currant, leather. Juicy red currant, cherry liqueur, spice. Medium bodied, mineral driven red fruit with nice balance, some anise added and the slightest hint of pyrazines on the back end.

2008 Williams Selyem Papera Zinfandel. At a perfect age. Concentrated red berry puree, nice black spice and bramble, bright acids.

With rare exception (Covid, illness, etc.) have been getting together with the same core family for as long as I can remember for Thanksgiving, and I’m 60. We used to get together a bit earlier for a game of footbal, but that has faded away. And due to aging/dearh/relocation, we have become the default hosts. We provide turkey, ham, apps, and drinks, and everyone brings sides/desserts. Only 1 person wanted real wine, so I opened a bottle of DeNegoce N.41 2018 CS. It tastes way better than its $20 price, and way better on Saturday than Thursday.

We have a few NFL/Cowboys fans, so that game is a must watch.

2021 JC Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Clos de la Boudriotte Rouge

Beautiful nose with intense, pure cranberry and ripe strawberry fruit. Palate had some forest floor as well as more beautiful fruit, but was just a bit reticient lacking full mid palate intensity at this time. Finish was long and beautiful. Even from 375 this probably needed a little time to fully blossom but was very enjoyable and of obvious high quality.

Borgogno’s “protest wine.” All the hallmarks of traditional Barolo aromatically, just perhaps some softer tannins, making this 2019 quite approachable now (still with plenty of structure). Great value here and lovely wine.

2015 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage
44% PN, 32%Chard, 24% PM, 6 years on lees and 5g/L dosage. Brought to my neighbors’ Thanksgiving dinner. 2015 has a reputation for being uneven in Champagne and of having some green notes. I didn’t detect any issues, but also wasn’t paying that much attention to the wine. This was pleasant, recognizable as a big house, & well-suited to the occasion. I preferred the 2013, but that one is getting long in the tooth - my last bottle had notes of oxydation around the edges that did not flatter the champagne.

Wanted to love it, but just liked it. I’ve enjoyed past bottles of this better. Seemed a bit dry and tired, like yours truly.

2006 Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne Romanee 1er Suchots

This was open for about 90 minutes before pouring. Absolutely stunning nose of black currants, violets, and rich loam. The palate had lithe acidity, more dark fruits, and elegant tannins. The finish was long and beautiful. This is drinking phenomenally right now; hopefully 06s are in the zone as I have a 06 mg clos vougeot lined up for this week.

Hey @Robert.A.Jr a bdx note!

2000 Le Forts de Latour

Beautiful perfumed nose with cranberry fruit, leather, cedar, and a hint of barnyard. Perfectly integrated soft tannic structure with great acidic core, lithe acidity, and classy elegance. Finish was tremendous and long. I can only imagine how the grand vin will drink, once ready.

Too late to add some notes? Wines from around thanksgiving. No great story, just a nice gathering of our small family

2021 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis - France, Burgundy, Chablis (12/1/2025)
Quintessential chablis, quintessential Louis Michel, all steely, mineral, with just enough lemony fruit to tie it together, a sense of the sea, razor sharp, will benefit from some age but very drinkable now. A good sign for the 1er and GC bottlings. (88 points)

2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (11/27/2025)
Dark garnet, showing some moderate age, needs some air to shed a bit of rusticity, then quite lovely dark cherry, a good dose of forest spice, excellent acidity, some moderate fine tannins, in a great place and should go another 10-20 years. (92 points)

2012 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Lyra 1ÖTW Reserve Ried Heiligenstein - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (11/26/2025)
Medium hay color, lovely aged riesling nose, no sign of petrol, rich and flavorful palate, a little straightforward and uncomplex in the warmer vintage, but good overall balance, and just flat out tasty.

I remember tasting this and the 2013 side by side when 13 was released, and this 12 is right where it should be. Will be interesting to try a 13 at some point, which had more tension and complexity in its youth. (92 points)

2021 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Chardonnay Rose Marsannay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay (11/24/2025)
Has some medium light golden color, bit of youthful sulfur on the nose, a deep, rich wine, had density, almost unctuous, but at the same time maintains plenty of acidity and a lightly mineral zing, rocky mineral and some nice saline on the finish. Delicious, interesting, complex, slightly unusual, lovely wine. No idea how it will age, but no sin in drinking now. (92 points)

2023 Cortell Wines Gamay Noir

This is the last of the berserkerday purchase. I’m a big fan of Oregon Gamay and is an ideal paring for turkey and all the fixings. Smooth, tart cranberry and a light herbal finish.
