Wedding/Anniversary

So yesterday I received in the mail what appears to be a very nice wedding invitation from a couple named Robert Levy and Martha McClellan. Is anyone else from here planning on attending? It isn’t until Spring 2011. [whistle.gif]

Ok, seriously. I got married in 2007, so I’ve been thinking about investing in a very nice bottle of 2007 Cabernet to cellar for a special anniversary (10th? 20th?), as it’s supposed to be THA BEST VINTAGE EVAH!!! Would I be crazy to pay $400 for one bottle of L-M for this occasion? Do you have other suggestions for a suitably special 2007 Cab that I should look into? Keep in mind that it needs to be something I would have a reasonable chance of finding (outside of an auction). I don’t have access to very many mailers (although I’ve been getting more and more these days…).

Wait for Mayacamas. Buy a case. Then you can happily drink one every five years until you’re dead.

The lone L&M wine that I had was undrinkable.

I like Evan’s idea of a case of reasonably priced wine that you can experiment with over the years. If you are looking for a trophy wine from 2007, here is what I would seek out and you can actually get ahold of:

Maybach Materium
Outpost True Vineyard
Alpha Omega BTK
Alpha Omega ERA
Spottswoode Estate

I was also married in 2007. In my first round of buying, I focused on CdP, many of which will last around 30 years. Next, I bought Riesling which will also last around 30 years. Next, I plan to buy Port, some of which will go up to 50 years or longer. I bought some Cali Cab but plan to drink it all in the next 10 - 15 years. When Dunn Howell Mountain comes out, I may pick up a few of them too.

Before we can really make suggestions, what style of cabernet do you like?

I guess I would say my tastes seem to run more towards a classic claret profile or “old school” Napa. For example, I’ve enjoyed Phelps Insignia before, which to me at times has seemed reminiscent of Pauillac wines.

I actually really like the idea of buying CdP instead of or in addition to a Napa Cab, so maybe I should also be asking what’s the best bang for the buck in Rhone 2007? [basic-smile.gif]

I’d buy a 6L of 07 Karl Lawrence before I’d even think about Levy McClellan.

True Dat.

Sounds easy to me. With your taste, Mayacamas it is. And my favorite CdP producer is Bois de Boursan, truly a traditional producer with a stunning high-end cuvee (Cuvee de Felix). Split up a case, taste on big anniversaries, profit.
