I just met with François last night and picked up 06, 08 and 09. The labels say François Bertheau. When asked, he mentioned that 2004 was when he started. Stunning wines btw, especially the 08s.
For me this is a grand cru climat. So much is said about about this vineyard. All the references to seduction and the rest. For my its simple, this vineyard, when handled well captures what i am really looking for in Pinot Noir, finesse, seduction, charm and effortlessness. Effortlessness is something i have tried to achieve in my winemaking since i first started with Bailey Carrodus at Yarra yering, for me its the sense of drink something other than liquid. You no longer are looking at tannins, flavours, acid, is ther oak?, cherries or anything else, it is a wine of exquisite pleasure on many other levels. This is about feelings and pleasure. I am sure it would bring peace to many fighting clans.
As far as i am concerned the pursuit of fine wines is at this level. Here’s to hedonism!
As for the above wine it was to young. However i enjoy looking at young wines, it helps me in my thoughts on wine making. 2007 is a year where we will see some wines showing lovely development early enough that we can enjoy the great climat maybe earlier. This was starting to show, the fruit was beginning to “decay”, moving away from primary more to the seduction we would expect. The palate is already long and super fine. The nose just starting to give up the scent of seduction. It is a teasing reminder of what is to come.
Lovely wine.
Thanks for the insights into those two 2001 Chambolles. I have 6 of both. It looks like I will be looking forward to some corked bottles of the Rion. At least the Roumier sounds like it escaped the issues Christophe had with a couple other 2001s of stuck fermentation and reduced wine.
I think I’ll let them both sleep for another 5 years or so, though.
Peter, as a simple matter: the yeasts stop eating the sugars and converting them to alcohol. The causes can be many; the remedies complex, and not at all foolproof. (Christophe Roumier is a very competent winemaker!)
I might be a little bit late to the game on this one, but one of my favorite “under the radar” - if it can still be called that - producers in Burgundy also makes a great villages Chambolle Musigny, Philipe Pacalet. There is also a 1er cru but I am not familiar with any grand cru wines in his Chambolle portfolio.
A second villages wine that I thought was spectacular and deserves particular mention is the 2006 Roumier CM. Not necessarily priced like a villages wine, but still an outstanding “value” in my eyes. I havent had it in about 6 months so no tasting note right now. But just thinking about makes me want to open one tonight…
2006 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (10/24/2009)
Terrific villages-level wine (though at the price, it should be). Nose was pure cherries and earth, with a nicely structured palate full of red fruit, minerals and earth, all in a very elegant package.
Xavier,
Outstanding Chambolle. To me, it has more interest than a strict village appelation wine.
I own this and have loved every sip.
In SF, at the Paulee, this was one of the most successful of the 07’s presented by some great producers. (All of the Roumiers were delicious in 07)
My take only.
Mark, welcome to WineBerserkers. I think your quote beautifully captures the essence of Les Amoureuses. My only complaint about it (other than the high prices) is that the largest holder of Les Amoureuses (Groffier) douses the wine with too much charred oak…
For most of us, we read about a wine on the board and then search the country looking for it. Ray reads these threads (that he started) hops in his car, meets the owner and then buys a bunch.
Ah man, you are on to me…
just went back for another case of Bonnes Mares and Les Amourouses. As an aside, he mentioned that he has a good amount of 2008s (this is relative to his 5 bbls of Amourouses and 4.5 bbls of Bonnes Mares of course) left. He is already sold out of 09 Les Amourouses, before I visited.
His straight CM village is one of the most complex I have had. He still has stocks from 2006 of the 1er Cru…
