Had a bunch of bottles on the floor to be checked in. Got that done and updated the wine inventory. I’m around 350 bottles. I always thought 300-something was probably a manageable number. At one time I was over 800 bottles. Nice job of drinking it down! Then I realized I peaked before my boys turned 21. It’s in the years since they hit drinking age that the cellar has dropped drastically.
I’ll have to thank them for getting my inventory down to a decent level. lol
You might want a lock on the door.
You have not taught your children well. My two sons both know that they will die a slow and painful death if they happen to remove anything without pre-clearance, except for stuff in the first column on the left side of the cellar, which is for $5 bargain Bordeaux and the like. One of the advantages of having a precise location in Cellartracker is that when they call me at the office and ask for permission to remove a really good bottle for that special date with a cute girl, I can tell them exactly where the bottle of $25 premium Moscato is located.
I couldn’t even tell you what we drank, I can only tell of going BACK over to my friends house a couple days later and there’s his dad, not interested in talking to any of us, installing a big door with a big lock.
Except that all of my kids have been to my offsite storage unit! And none of them live in the same state. My wife, on the other hand, has never seen it, although she knows that it exists. In fact, there is a very nice restaurant across the street where I never take her because it would be too difficult to not take her to the storage unit if I did.
I envy you, frankly. Our sons (20 and 27), who went to Alsace and Burgundy with us many times from 1988-2002 think of those trips a child abuse. They also are about as uninterested in the wines we bought there…as can be. One drinks an occasional beer and will taste a wine at dinner; the younger one, does neither, claiming he doesn’t like the taste. (He’s in college…and I know he’ll have a beer with his friends, but…).
I feel a bit deprived…of sharing the enjoyment and of preserving any of the collection for their ultimate enjoyment. (And, when the older one occasionally asks for a “bottle” to take to someone’s house where he’s having dinner…I tell him (honestly) I don’t have bottles really suitable for house gifts.
My kids, 39 & 44’ both like wine and can’t wait to get to MI to peruse the cellar. They can choose anything they want. Only there for about two 10-day stints.
When my son was a teen, he admitted to taking an occasional bottle with the neighbor kid. I made my own back then and nothing of real value to worry about. Now they can have what they want. I think I give them better wines than I drink. They will get it all eventually anyway.
One of my girls (in my opinion a cute one) recently moved back home…to “fix” her finances. My car is in front of the Vinoteque in the garage but we have a nice storage space below the stairway that holds around 100 nice bottles but nothing outrageous. She knows that she and friends can take anything from the stairway area but don’t even THINK about moving the car!
I really enjoy going tasting with my kids. Our standard Thanksgiving weekend includes a trip to Patricia Green and Shea. Our younger daughter loves to talk about the places we went tasting with her in the Rhine, Alsace, Burgundy and Chateauneuf. My son, on the other hand, is frustrating to taste with. He has the palate and vocabulary to be the next Robert Parker, but he prefers Scotch and Makers Mark.
