Making a one-week trip to Washington State in July. Was looking for some recommendations on places to stay.
We were thinking of doing Yakima Valley, but from what I can tell, there aren’t a lot of great tasting rooms nearby to visit, and restaurants and lodging are sparse as well.
Not sure if we want to head as far east as Walla Walla (we’re flying in and out of Seattle), but are open to suggestions. Yakima still seems like a good location, if the lodging/restaurants/wineries are there - so, still a possibility if someone out there will confirm (or deny)?
We’d want to spend about 4 days/3 nights in wine country. Any recos for areas to target or even specific lodging? We have two families of 3 (4 adults and 2 1-year-olds total). We’d like to maybe even get some cabin that we all can share, or perhaps even stay at a winery or something to that effect. Having decent restaurants and wineries in the area are a must.
I live about 10 miles east of Yakima and I have to say there’s not much there there. I would suggest heading for the Tri Cities area or, better yet, continue on to Walla Walla. If you don’t want to drive that far east, look for tasting rooms on the west side near Woodinville. Sorry, I don’t have any reccos for lodging.
Eastern Washington is hot and dry in July, with not much going on. If you want to hang around and recreate,
the Lake Chelan area is a better bet. The wineries are not yet winning prizes, but are decent.
You will get a better tasting experience at Woodinville, and the South Park area in Seattle.
BTW, I highly recommend driving the loop to Chelan by Hwy 2, then continuing north and coming back
on Hwy. 20, the North Cascades Hwy. One of the most beautiful drives in the county. You can even stop and taste wine at the Lost River Winery in Winthrop.
If you go to Walla Walla, the little town of Waitsburg is a happenin’ little place about 20 miles north, with several good places to eat (jimgermanbar, Whoopemup Hollow Cafe). Wine writer Paul Gregutt and his wife offer several charming cottages to stay, totally remodeled, that you can find at waitsburgcottages.com. NFI, but Paul and Karen Gregutt are friends.
