Warning to Those Flying AA out of Barcelona with Wine!

Anyone know a good golf discussion website? I’m going to go there and say I hate golf.

I attend the BWW and Off The Record in Barcelona every February and fly out with a bunch of samples in my luggage. I never had a problem but I never flew AA. BA and Iberia!

I have a question: why would somebody fly to a wine producing country with a box of wine bottles? Isn’t exploring new horizons and discovering new wines part of the thrill? Seems odd to me.

Because sometimes you want to drink other things in addition to what is available for exploration at retail and in restaurants. Sometimes you want to share wine from your own country with friends in other countries. Sometimes you want to drink wines with age while you are on vacation without spending a fortune. Sometimes you want to drink specific wines with the food at specific restaurants where they don’t have that wine. Sometimes you want to drink your favorite wines in a special setting. Sometimes you’re at a house in the middle of nowhere and you don’t have access to a good wine store. Shall I go on…?

In general, because I drink mature red wines for the most part .

And in particular to Spain, I don’t like modern wines. In Spain, plenty of whites BTG that I enjoy, never reds.

Although Spain is the one country where older wines are relatively more available, I didn’t see any on my last Barcelona trip.

As far as discovering new wines, I don’t drink a lot and can’t waste the time on misses.

Thanks to this board, I found nice wine in Croatia without hit or miss.

I am going to Argentina for the holidays , will bring a bottle for Xmas and New Years. Doubt I’ll drink much other wine.

If there is a country where you can find vintages at a relatively friendly price, Spain is the one for sure.
I don’t think you can find a restaurant in Spain serving spanish food that won’t pair well with spanish wines unless you pick a sushi restaurant or a British pub…

Good for your tastes.

Yours aren’t everyone’s.

And that wasn’t my experience in Barcelona this year. 3 restaurants , no red wine I wanted to drink.

(Different in San Sebastián).

We’ve spent 2-3 weeks in Spain every year since 2013, eating and drinking at every level, including a great deal of Spanish wine. I think we know what we’re doing. Shockingly, we are really good at making sure we eat and drink the way we want to, with a wide variety of options that make us very happy. That is what it’s all about.

I visit many wineries and wine makers. Sometimes, especially if you know them, they appreciate other wines and older wines.

Don’t bother. The fact that our detailed and copious good reasons for traveling with wine haven’t brought any kind of “ah - that makes sense, now I see,” means the question wasn’t genuine in the first place. As is so often the case, it’s a criticism, scold or judgement framed in the disingenuousness of “I’ve never understood why…”

Enough of a part of the parlance of this board that it should be known as a “Berserk”.

I do this quite often. It never seems to be unwelcome.

We go to Spain 3-4 times a year and always take a few bottles of our own wine (ok we go via car). Why? Because we have a lot of wine at home!

I haven’t flown out of BCA before but I do fly AA almost exclusively and have never encountered an issue flying with wine. I routinely bring home a case or more of wine from Germany when I am there for work. I typically transit back through Heathrow although sometimes I catch the DFW or CLT connecting flight back to LAX.

Seems like this is a power control situation or maybe a 3rd party subcontractor they are using who doesn’t know the rules.
