Thanks for participating with Rhys, Mark. All notes are welcome.
Most of my gifts have come from family, but one came from a friend I worked with for 20 or 30 years. Steve did not drink and the only thing he knew about wine was that I talked about it frequently and received lots of packages at work. One year he gifted me a bottle of 2012 Buehler Estate Cabernet. I had planned to drink it three years ago, but did not go to that locker during the past three years. I think it would have been better three years ago, and while it still has some nice Cabernet fruit, the structure is taking over. It was still nice to think about Steve, who died way to young a few years ago, and raise a glass to him.
David
David, glad you decided to crack it open in honor of your friend. That’s another good thing wine can do for us. When we recall special people in our lives and can think about bottles shared together or gifted or just memories of good times together. Thank you for the story
Apothic Rose…gifted to us by visitng relative from California,my wife’s side of the family, at Thanksgiving dinner, who said she really liked this Rose…I offered to serve it if chilled…It wasn’t so I put it in the cellar… tasted without prejudging 2 weeks later, tasted twice over 2 nights, with consistant results…Wd not buy and wd not willingly drink again, no fruit, no sense of anything other than alcohol…Perhaps she liked it because she got a buzz from it? who knows? ABV shown as 13.5% which seems pretty high for a Rose. Vintage, if there was one, not recalled, as bottle no longer available to check…If I were still playing golf(stopped a number of years ago and gifted my clubs to my SIL) wd consider cleaning my golf clubs with this wine…Other than that, this is clearly a DNPIM wine as far as I am concerned.
Few people give me wine. This was given to us by lovely neighbors when we kept an eye on their house while they were on a glorious, month-long trip. I rarely drink wine from Napa and didn’t have an occasion to open it until this charity week.
2017 Stags’ Leap Merlot
Strong nose of black currant, which was a bit surprising to me. On the palate, more like black plums and blackberries, leather, and a oak-ish finish (to me… Husband disagreed with my evaluation of oak). 14.5% alcohol, and although it’s noticeable, it’s not over-the-top.
I have a customer who shares an industrial complex with a custom crush facility. One of the clients there is a customer of his and gifted him a a few bottles of wine, red/white/risé, which he subsequently gifted a bottle of with me.
2022 Daniel Wines Rosé Renaissance - Russian River Valley
A blend of several vineyards, no variety listed, nine stands out. Kinda simple, saignée, 13.9, low acid, off dry. My Wife said it’s “Easy Drinking”. That it is, just not a lot going on though. No bad just not memorable.
And two days late, someone just gifted this to my wife. It’s another example of a well-intended person saying “Oh, you like wine? I liked this one!”
Chris
Better late than never and thanks for closing out the thread
This sums up the gift receiving process for many of us. All we can say is “Gee, thanks”. I was hoping to entice folks to actually drink some of these gifts to celebrate the giver and maybe not the wine so much.
I’ll tally up the votes and make the contribution to St Jude
Thanks to all who participated, human and feline.
Hope to do it again next year with a better theme.
Please visit and post in Brian’s thread this week!
I originally wanted to pop this wine for this thread but had a cold. I hope cross posting is ok.
Wines I have tasted from Paso Robles for the most part have never done it for me. Most have been blends that seem to be seeking an identity. When I received this one from my Secret Santa I was like, “Familiar with the producer name, never had one, let’s give it a whirl.”
Brought it to dinner last night to share with Son-in-law and Step-Daughter. Totally whiffed on a photo op.

2016 Linne Calodo Problem Child - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (12/23/2023)
Was a Secret Santa gift, never tasted one before. Only Paso bottle in my cellar. Zin, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend at a whopping 15.7%abv. Dark black cherry color, nose more GSM than Zinfandel. Blackberry, black cherry, the blending wines must have been pretty ripe as the palate was all ripe fruit with no acid backbone to speak of and little spice. Kinda what I usually get from Paso wines I’ve had. Was easy drinking and hid the alcohol well but not memorable. Wouldn’t seek out more.
