2023 Lunaria ‘Ramoro’ Pinot Grigio Terre de Chieti Abruzzo
Organic, 13.5% abv.
Smells a bit candied, watermelon and faint strawberry. On the palate, this starts out a bit acid like watermelon rind and some fresh strawberry. This turns super quickly into something akin to strawberry jolly rancher… a flavor that lingers. I should have paid $2 more for Mary J. Blige’s Sun Goddess Pinot Grigio Ramato, which a colleague once gave to me and is much preferable to this Lunaria.

Wow, didn’t think Abruzzo did Pinot Grigio. Thanks Astrid for the $5 bonus donation. Also, I didn’t realize Pinot Grigio was made into rose, but it looks to be somewhat prevalent.

I’ll pledge an additional $10 to the first five tasters that include their favorite scene, theme, or locale from the film “Call Me By Your Name” (on Netflix). A great tribute to the beauty of Northern Italia.

Not always a “rose” per se but the skin does have some color on a lot of Pinot Gris. In the past it has not been completely uncommon for some houses to use skin contact and make the wine have some color. Usually not really pink but maybe more of a coppery tone. It might be where so-called “orange wine” got its name originally but I do not know.

Peter Cargasacchi made one in this style in Santa Barbara County back in the day. He told his customers that he worked with native tribes in the area to secure the eagle’s blood that gave it its hue.

Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio “Terra Alpina” Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT
On the nose, citrus, honeydew, green pear and something herbal like lemongrass. On the palate, lemon, green pear, lime zest. Seems ever so slightly effervescent. Nice and refreshing.

2019 Pra Monte Grande Soave Classico
Veneto

70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave with grapes allowed to partially dry on the vine to concentrate the juices.

I got a six pack of this and this is the third bottle. All about honey on the color, nose, and palate. Also honeydew and almond paste. This has less acidity than the previous couple of bottles and seems a bit flat. I am told that this could improve for ten years, but no way based on this bottle. This is a “drink up.”

Here is the only other white I have from Northern Italy that is not from Piedmonte. A yearly purchase for us, very poundable. 100% Prié Blanc

  • 2022 Ermes Pavese Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle - Italy, Valle d'Aosta, Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle (12/14/2024)
    Pale straw color, wet stones, pear, grapefruit, green apple. Front of palate a bit washed out but that doesn’t last long. Honeyed green tea, lemon cream, lip smacking acidity. Finishes with under-ripe green apple and more creamy lemon. I buy these every year and they fail to disappoint. Should go great with our Tacos tonight.

Pinot Noir from Valle d’ Aoste. Dressner import at dinner at Bar Marco with pasta. Little more tannic than expected and fuller bodied.
