I want to taste with Pinot Paul!

Late start here. Looking to finish strong.

  • 2008 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (11/24/2022)
Lots of Bing cherry action with herby stem inclusion. Perfectly generous, lifting acidity lacking tartness with very finely focused tannin. Terrific.

2015 Under The Wire Pinot Noir Sparkling Hirsch Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview (11/25/2022)
Rose gold hue, just short of a Blanc de Noir, a fine bead. Reticent nose at first, floral with an hour of air. Creamy mouthfeel, clean, crisp, with structure. Fresh and lively on the palate. Tart cherry, red berries, saline. No discernible dosage. Medium body, medium minus alcohol, medium plus acidity. Great as aperitif, or with dessert. Sonoma Coast at its best, so energetic. Disgorged Jan 2019, ready now.

2012 Windy Oaks Estate Pinot Noir Special Burgundian Clone Schultze Family Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (11/25/2022)
I’ve been looking forward to trying this quietly famous suitcase clone - I’ve tasted it several times, but never followed it over the course of an evening. Pale garnet in color, no bricking. Black tea, as well as a hint of oak spice and herbaceousness by on the nose. Intense on the palate, elegant with subtlety, tannins well integrated. Cherry and strawberry. Medium body, medium alcohol, medium plus acidity. Still primary after 10 years, just barely beginning to show some age. No rush on this one.

2016 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (11/23/2022)
Pale ruby color. Complex varietal nose, forest floor. Just reaching maturity. Red and blue fruit on the palate. Balanced with good structure, medium acid and tannins. Medium body and alcohol. Good value.

Two red burgs and some champagne to add from yesterday:
[]2019 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine - France, Champagne (11/24/2022)
This was open for about 4 hours before it fully turned on. It’s extremely young, but with a lot of elegance and poise filled with red apples, Meyer lemon, creamed pears, biscuits, birthday cake, vanilla beans, stone fruits, yellow flowers, hazelnuts, Lemon oils, toast, and baking spices. The Medium bodied feel is elegant and balanced with crisp, high acidity. This is young, but sexy and balanced. It needed a few hours to get going and probably needs another 5+ years to get where it needs to go. (92 pts.)
[
]2014 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée (11/24/2022)
After about ~5 hours, this really turns on and takes you right to Vosne. The aromas really hit in the upper register with a purple-hue to the tones of violets, red cherries, wild red berries, spice notes, rose petals, red currants, and bits of sweet tobacco. The Medium bodied feel is silky and demure with a lovely finish that punches past the level. The Medium+ acidity is mouthwatering and tart with silky, medium tannins. This needs some air to show itself, but it’s a real beauty of a Village wine already. It can also benefit from a few more years as it does take a bit to get going. (91 pts.)

2018 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée (11/24/2022)
This shows more ripe fruit than the 14 as it shows off tart red cherries, raspberries, red currants, plums, licorice, pomegranate, violets, spice notes, and red florals. There is very good depth with a plushness to the tones that is in major contrast to the more ethereal 14. The Medium/full bodied feel shows a richer side with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This shows the vintage well as it is riper, but it isn’t overdone or too rich. This could well use a few years to sort itself out, though it will likely carry that plush quality throughout its life. (90 pts.)
We will be back in Oregon in May. You would enjoy tasting with Paul at Longplay in Newberg, OR. Todd Hansen has a turntable in his tasting room and always plays the David Bowie records for Paul.

Some from the last few days.

  • 2010 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (11/24/2022)
Decanted for 3 hours. Purple fruit and spice, tobacco with good body and a long finish. Continued to improve with air. Nothing to write home about, but a good drink. (94 points)
  • 2010 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (11/24/2022)
Just as DWSTYLE, cork was nearly completely soaked and there was wine in the capsule. At first I thought it was Coravin'd, but no pierce through the capsule. Just a very poor cork it seems. Decanted, but wine wasn't very bright or fresh. Tasted much older than it was, but still drinking surprisingly well at this point.
  • 2017 David Duband Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Cuvée Louis Auguste - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits (11/23/2022)
Pop and rest. This has really mellowed out with some age, but still needs air time to show. Crisp and lean, this has a nice tart red fruit with lots of spices on a light frame. Very drinkable right now.
  • 2019 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée (11/21/2022)
PnP. Deep purple. Very full and lush, but not too rich, balanced weight. Quite primary. Needs lots of time to shed the baby fat. Second day still quite deep. Lots of potential and at a great price point. (93 points)
  • 2019 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (11/19/2022)
Quick decant. Some rustic NSG qualities. Good balance of fruit and acidity, if fairly forgettable as a whole. Should have the structure to develop some interest over time.

Had this for Thanksgiving. It was lithe and beautiful and fruity and spicy. Everything one would want in a village Vosne from M-G. Lovely texture somewhere around rich but without any heaviness. Not especially complex or long but quite delicious and youthful. Just lovely stuff. Bought the back when the distributor had a hard time getting rid of this bottling. Hard to imagine that these days.

2010 Hudelot bottles were notorious for being leakers. I’ve never heard an explanation, but my working hypothesis is that there was something wrong with their bottling line, every bottle was either overfilled, or something like the vacuum wasn’t working during corking.

We had two really nice American BdN’s with our Thanksgiving dinner (which was also outstanding).

2017 Ultramarine Rosé Heintz Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Delicious before and during our Thanksgiving meal. It was more giving than expected, with lots of chalky strawberry, peach. The bead was perfect. While I’ve had mixed (mostly positive) experiences with Ultramarine wines, this Rosé was superb.

2015 Wenzlau Vineyard Cuvée L’Inconnu Blanc de Noirs - USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills (11/24/2022)
A gorgeous and unique American sparkling wine for Thanksgiving . This was very vinous. While it’s not made as a rosé, the color is an attractive copper or maybe more accurately coral. A beautiful fruity, steely nose, with sour cherry, pear and red raspberries. Succulent on the palate, especially compared to their crystalline BdB (which I also love). Interestingly, the bead is quite gentle; I’m guessing this was bottled at 4 atm or less (maybe they’re Cedric Bouchard admirers). Count me as a fan.

Pours brick with a garnet core. Dried flowers, cinnamon with a whiff of strawberry rhubarb. Really pleasing candied cherries and green tea, vibrant and juicy with expansive acidity that delights the entire palate. Very soft integrated tannins and that juiciness that lingers on. Hard to put down, a real joy to drink at this stage.

Platt… Yummy

Hey everyone, today is the final day for the challenge. I’ll accept notes up through midnight Los Angeles time. Keep posting and thank you.

2018 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Reserve

Old Faithful! I believe this is the entry level bottling. Medium ruby color. The aromas are red cherry with a hint of raspberry and a hint of earth. The palate is light in body but solid in texture, with some surprising breadth and nice balancing acidity. This is more Burgundian than most American Pinots, reminiscent perhaps of a nice village Santenay. There’s an herbal tweak in the finish. Nothing profound here, but a very pleasant glass with an after-Thanksgiving omelet dinner. Rated 88.5.

Frank, thanks for posting this reminder, but you might also want to consider editing the title of the thread, as the end date there is listed as the 29th (Tuesday). I just teed up a 2017 Les Longue Voyes for sushi tonight, so I will make sure I beat the new deadline :wine_glass:

Yeah, let me fix that. A few of you reported that to me today.

Enjoy the Longues Voyes. I like that cuvee, although I believe he is not making it with that Montagne fruit anymore.

Thanks for doing this. No pictures, but the 2009 Mount Eden estate Pinot Noir was exceptional. Lovely strawberry, cherry and floral notes, with a nice Burgundian earth tone underneath. The wine is beautifully balanced, elegant and rich. It will improve in the cellar, but it is drinking wonderfully now.
