Virtual Tasting for Charity Week 1 - Empty My Wallet, Help Me Support Laura’s House (11/18 - 11/27)

That’s the best Copain pinot, maybe along with the couple vintages of Wendling Whole Cluster. Great stuff.

Took a few days off, but here we go

  • 2018 Domaine de Bichery Champagne Les Fontaines Rosé Brut Nature - France, Champagne (11/22/2022)
1600 bottles produced (#1160), no dose. Nice pink color, wonderfully expressive fruit nose full of fruit. Savory and sweet red fruits mixed together, some light spice that lingers on the front of the tongue. Impressive first experience with Bichery.

Shout out to Ryan Zepaltas, Copain’s winemaker.

Not that Ryan isn’t terrific, he is.

But 2009 was all Wells Guthrey

I’m back! If for no other reason than to drink good Pinot for a multitude of good reasons:

This was somewhere between surprise and shock. I didn’t expect much from a 20 year old bottling of young vine Oregon Pinot. Waaay more than expected! Light garnet color with just a touch of bricking. Ridiculously fresh aromas, barely secondary, featuring red raspberry and a touch of both black and red cherry. The palate was a little soft, tannins resolved, but with enough acid to keep it fresh. Excellent balance, mature, but in no danger of getting old. Rated 92.5.

This is a wine I import. Their regular bottling is always nice, the Family Reserve is a big step up. This is vigorous, but not to a fault. Young and a little aggressive, with tannins to resolve, it is more Burgundian than New World, reminiscent of a young entry-level Cotes de Nuits. Unlike the previous, I own more of this. It won’t peak for at least 3 years, probably best in 2025 - 2030. I’ve got more lined up, but a lot of the people who will be dining on Birdday drink that darned white wine. I’ll do my best for Laura’s House. Thanks Frank!

Oops, That’s right Brig. Ryan was doing his own label until 2014 and consulting on a few others. Copain came after.

Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast 2011

Not an FMIII wine, but really good right now.

Dark purple berry fruit, some tart cherry skin, orange zest, dark kitchen spice, a savory chalky finish. 14.4 but no heat or overripeness.

It would have been fun to blind this to someone who is strident about hating KB.

@Jim_Stewart just pick up week 3 and I might double his donation of the rest of the weeks fill up.

They always do!

2010 Joseph Roty Bourgogne Rouge a random singleton I found looking for some Pinot for the cause.

I am a big fan of Roty, and while this has certainly peaked, its not in decline at this point, but showing lots of tertiary character. Red cherries, leather, balsamic, and medium plus acid on palate. Way over-performed for its lowly classification.

adding another note for this same wine Marie Courtin Resonance- BdN that is super well made and is well balanced, bright but maintaining a bit of roundness that is really nice. think that @ChrisJames nailed it with this note.

2007 Rhys Swan Terrace - Night one, the tannins led to a prominent dryness, not something I appreciate. The second night, the tannins crept into the background, the acidity came forward, leading to a more balanced wine. For my tastes, I will save my remaining bottle several years and hope the tannins fade and the fruit holds up.

Keep up the great work everyone. The photos, the notes, the effort. All of it is helping.

And I wanted to ring the bell this morning in honor of a Berserker who made a $500 donation this morning on behalf of the effort here. I’m thankful that many of you are motivated and inspired by the work of Laura’s House, your own stories and interactions from the dynamics of domestic violence, in order to help us bring positive change. To the guy that made it and reached out to me, THANK YOU!

2018 de Negoce Willamette Valley Pinot Noir no. 65 Bought a few dN wines at the beginning of their project and quickly stopped. Some have been quite good, this was not my favorite as it missed the mark for Oregon Pinot for me. Dark fruited, hint of confection and missing the brightness and red fruit I love in Oregon Pinot that makes it so versatile.

Going to do 3 Pinots from worst to first. For $7.50 very drinkable but glad I only got 2.

  • 2019 A to Z Wineworks Pinot Noir - USA, Oregon (11/20/2022)
Day 1: While this is not great Pinot Noir it is very drinkable and actually has Pinot characteristics unlike that mass produced garbage from California. You know the brands. Sweet fruits featuring strawberry and dark cherry. Some spice, rose petals and earth. Acidity levels a bit lower than I like but for Thanksgiving this will please the masses. 86 points
Day 2: Smoke, dark cherry, strawberry, mild spice and floral notes. Again, this is not a Pinot I would drink but it was $7.50 so of course I am going to try it. 85 points
Day 4: Better and more mellow. Smoke, spice, strawberry, candied fruits and pepper. Really feels like there is some Syrah blended in here. 87 points
Recommendation: Well for the $7.50 a bottle I paid worth a gamble as these have been drinkable in the past but this wine is no very good and please don’t pay full retail. (87 points)
