Vintage Hock

One of the precursors to Eskimo Joe is a band called Freud’s Pillow and they have a song called Mr. Hoek. Hmmm.

2012: I posted on it here. I am procuring a couple of bottles which should be on their way to me soon from deepest New Jersey.

Deepest New Jersey? I’m not sure whether to laugh or run in fear!

I’ve written up a bit on Woodlands in the thread where you wrote your TN.

As noted previously, Hock is a British references to Rieslings from of Germany. The term dates at least back to Shakespeare days as he refers to both at different times. (edited to remove a reference to “Sack”).

Drew mentioned the term “blackstrap”. That term was used in the 19th and early 20th century to describe Port, referring to molasses, which is why it’s used with rum too.

but i thought Sack was a fortified white imported from Spain or the Canarys… ??

Duh, you’re absolutely correct. I had a brain fart there for a minute. Shakespeare does refer to both.
