Vinous re-visits the 'nightmare' 2008 vintage in Burgundy

I love 2008 but you have to be choosy. I’ve said it many times, but Dujac killed 08. Never had one I didn’t love. But that’s not true across the board. I’ve never been a fan of 08 Chevillon. Or Barthod. Or some others. I also think the wines are best at the upper echelons, where the density of the fruit can carry the acidity.

Do you think that these undoubtedly excellent wines have much relevance when assessing a vintage as a whole? if that sort of thing is all you drink(very much your loss) then you don’t need to think about vintage at all.

My last bottle was a 2008 Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny Feusselottes. Beautiful, cherry bowl aromas and flavors. It did shut down and become harder about an hour in. None of their 2008s have had the screeching acidity many wines show.

I’ve tasted enough Dujac and d’Angerville from the vintage to have the impression they also did well.

It’s not my favorite vintage either, but I’ve had many good wines. Some clunkers too, but I’m not an acid freak.

It’s been well established that the vast majority of wine I drink is from top producers. I’m perfectly happy with this situation and don’t need your condolences.

2008 MG Vosne Romanee is fantastic.

I’m talking about other people’s perceptions of it. What’s lean for some people is not lean for others.

This is meant as a caution for folks who like riper wines with softer acidity. 2008 is not a vintage for them.

I can see your point and agree with it.

I don’t recommend 13s and 14s to those that love 15s

I think most people who got into Burgundy recently (especially with the current run of solar vintages) are going to be '15 people rather than '13 or '14 people.

Loved his wines. Major regret is not picking up the CSD when it was a couple of hundred dollars.

Yes. I bought the 08 Dujac CSD and CdlR for $180/btl. Unfortunately, I was a law student at the time and had a very small wine budget. So it was only 2 bottles of each, even though I knew at the time it was a silly deal (though it was not limited to Dujac; I still have 08 Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes that I picked up from Premier Cru for $125/bottle). I’ve backfilled 08 Dujac and am still a buyer.

I had an 08 Rousseau Mazy last week- not great. Was hoping the depth of Mazy as a vineyard would help with the vintage but found it acidic and lacking a bit of the structure I would expect from the producer and vineyard.

Had this set in 2025.
All good, none great.
Prieuré Roch was the most perfumed and expressive of them and my favourite. Gibourg had most depth in flavour and was the least lean one of them.

I would never pay anything close to their going price personally.

You wouldn’t pay the going price for the 2008 vintage or current vintages or either?

Probably either, but was mostly talking about these wines in this vintage.

You can certainly add me to those who love the 08 Chevillons right now though some will definitely still improve and none are in imminent danger of decline

I suppose the acid averse might disagree but it will surprise no one to hear that I am not one of their number

Chevillon did well in 07-08. Idk how many people remember the Noreetuh dinner where we opened 07 Chevillon and MG chaignots side by side and most people preferred the Chevillon. I think that was 5 years ago now.

Count me among those who have found many terrific 2008 red burgs to cellar and enjoy. As it happens, Grivot (one of my very favorite producers) did really well in 2008, and I tend to reach for them when I want an 08. But I have enjoyed 08s from MG, Gerard Mugneret, Dujac, Chevvilon, H-N, Lignier-Michelot, Faiveley and Jadot.

FWIW, I was in Burgundy in the summer of 2011 and attended a Gevrey-Chambertin “class” led ny Allen Meadows. In all of the cellars we tasted, as well as at the private tastings he led, he had us tasting 2008s rather than 2009s as he believed 2008 to better show terroir.

Well he’s wrong about that, but I do think 08 is a somewhat under appreciated vintage. I’ll stand by my belief that 09 is the best vintage in the 2000s.
