Valentine's weekend wines- '52 Borgogno, '97 Gaja Costa Russi, '06 Jadot CM Amoureuses

2006 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses
This was one of those WOW wines that makes you glad you cellar Burgundy. Floral, spicy nose. Red and dark pinot fruit on the palate with full mid-palate and balancing acidity and just when I was ready for a somewhat tannic finish, it all melts into pure silk. So smooth and so long on the back end. Don’t know why I only bought 2 of these, I usually buy 3 to 6, but wish I had a case. Absolutely ready now but I’ll hold this last bottle for 5 to 10 to see what this will become.

1952 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva
Thought this could be a crapshoot but it was a pleasant surprise. Crystal clear red color just starting to brown at the edge. Flowers and old leather on the nose. Dried cherries, dried spices on the palate. Just the right amount of structure left to compliment the flavors and a long, long finish. Decanted and first tasted at one hour. Still going strong and developing after 2 1/2 hours. I’m not usually a big Borgogno fan, but this is terrific.

1997 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi Riserva
Nearly opaque, dark, dark black red. Much more youthful (duh) on the nose, all tar and flowers. Tart dried black cherries on the palate with smooth but prominent tannins and a bracing acid tannin, finish that is still pretty drying. I’ll wait 5 to 10 years on my 2 remaining bottles, but this is a very well made wine.

All three of these wines were as youthful, exciting and sexy as my Valentine!
Cheers!
