That is one that I stared at for way too long before it was gone! Total regret!
This thread is painful now. Why didnt i order more?
Ok, here is a clunker, and it was actually the very first wine that I purchased because I love wines from Rockpile.
2018 Paradise Ridge Rockpile Zinfandel (which is owned by the Wilson family who are Zin experts, so who knows)). This wine is so acidic that it is almost unbearable for me. Iām wondering if it was stored incorrectly. The acid calms down a lot on night two, but the first night my mouth purses like Iām sucking on a lemon.
I bought half cases of Portalupi Barbera and Petite Sirah and theyāre both drinking great now. '18 and '19 with an MSRP of about $45 - $48 that I think I paid around $8 - $10 for.
Agreed, loved the Portalupi Barbera. The PS was just OK I thought, a touch on the lighter side for a PS.
Last night, the wife and I opened up our first 2018 Tertulia Carmenere. Man, it was really nice. This winery went out of business during the pandemic, but this supposedly was their best offering and I can see it. There are not a lot of domestic Carmenere only bottlings, so this one had me curious, but I am glad that I got some and naturally wish that I had gotten more!!! It had these really interesting notes of JalapeƱo!
I think I ended up with 2 cases + 3 bottles, and of those was only really happy with the case of la Ragnaie RdM. Excellent RdM from a great vintage and happy to have it. A case of Tiziano Mazzoni Collina Novaresi has been quite poor, not flawed but very dilute and hollow in the middle, which is surprising considering 2019 was a very good year and that this wine is a Kermit import that goes for maybe $30 a bottle at his pricing. Iād be very unhappy at that price. The final 3 bottles were a random Brunello that is okay but nothing too exciting, and had only been added to fill out a case, while the other 9 bottles were missing at inventory. My overall satisfaction rate with the sale is generally low but total cost input was also not that significant. Again, happy to have the Ragnaie at that price and should likely have just bought two or three cases of that with the advantage of hindsight. Although I donāt actually recall if there were two or three cases to be had at that point.
I made only 1 purchase for myself: 2017 Scherrer cab sauv, Scherrer vineyard. Great juice that will only get better.
Scott - How much did you pay? I bought the 2016 from WTSO for $55. Scherrer releases their SV cab for $55 at the winery but once they get them in their library they bump up the price to $150 or maybe more depending on their age. The one I bought was from their library so I thought I was getting a good deal. Weāre on the Scherrer email list so go to their free open house tastings 2 - 3 times a year.
@NormPB , I canāt remember if you were active in the UC sale. If not, you have no frame of reference, but Iām gonna guess like $20 with shipping for the Scherrer Cabernet.
John is right on the money. It was around $21 ($26 with shipping).
I did buy 5 or 6 cases during that sale but not the Scherrer. I got a case or 2 of Trecini SB for about $5 each and about 10 Portalupi barberas and PS, maybe $8. That reminded me, so I just got a '19 Portalupi Shake Ridge barbera out of the cellar for tonight. Bought many others as well. It was an interesting experience as bottles would continuously sell out while I was checking out. A lot of great deals - unfortunately paid for by the many wineries that never got paid.
I donāt see much activity in this thread. I wonder if the UC bankruptcy scared off people from this model of wine selling. I know Iām mostly avoiding mystery wine in general though UC is more āmystery gamblingā wine.
