This is exactly what I’ve heard from others as well. The question is whether it’s worth the money and really that is in the eyes of the beholder. With as many alternatives as there are, it’s tough to justify the higher price at this point according to those that I know that have tried those wines. That is not a reflection of the quality of the wine whatsoever.
Having been on the list since the 2011 vintage, it’s no longer worth the money. I love the wines, but the relative value is now upside down.
anyone want to buy 4 bottles of 2020 Ultramarine Rose off me?
An honest question - can you ask for a refund? Please keep us posted.
I was buying them from the 2010 to 2017. I agree that the price just wasn’t making sense anymore and stopped buying. Sounds like that was a good idea.
I wouldn’t, not without them explicitly acknowledging an issue. I’ve always viewed wine as caveat emptor, I have had flawed wines from retailers I’m tight with and from folks on this board and I just keep it to myself.
To each their own, but consensus is telling me that there is an issue that is not being addressed.
What do you mean Larry? I am really confused by what you are apparently trying to say.
What I’m trying to say is that there seems to be consensus that this is a faulty Wine. Nothing more, nothing less. And that’s based on all of the comments here. I have not had this wine myself but trust plenty of folks out there who have posted here in elsewhere. That’s all.
But not being addressed by the winery? Aren’t they replacing bottles when people contact them with issues? I saw that upthread.
Did not see that - and if that was the case, why wouldn’t they simply recall the wine so to speak? How many folks who purchase are not here and have no idea they are doing this?
Sounds like MB’20.
“Oh, you noticed?”
UM was essentially our house bubble for several years. Have been buying since 13 vintage and have a healthy allocation. With the extreme bottle variation beginning in 19ish im now out for good. Hell i had to “sneak” a few bottles of hirsch rose into a friends wine box from a split order just to get rid of them. I am at around a 10% hit rate for 2018 and on. 17’s and prior are almost like wines from a different producer entirely. It’s baffling. UM officially shit the bed.
Edit the 16 ldg mag i had at brunch that was a sour beer was also baffling. If it had been labeled floodland or jester king (and not served with french toast or whatever) it would have been great ha
Ive only opened one ldg so far, the 2014 Heintz BdD, and it also tasted like cider. I expected to enjoy it more than the regular release but it was way worse. Figured i just got unlucky but maybe it’s a theme with the ldg wines??
Had the 12 BdB late disgorgement in 2021. It was excellent but a different profile than the regular release. The regular release has a fruit driven profile while the ldg had more bread/yeast. No sour or off flavors.
I’m not aware of any smoke-related recalls on impacted wines that made it to market (blessedly few). As you know, smoke impacts aren’t simple, they aren’t black and white, and nor are people’s sensory experiences with them. Like Brett. Do wineries routinely recall wines because of Brett? No. Not based on the many undrinkably bretty wines I’ve purchased at retail. Why would they do a recall for smoke? The impacts are evident - or at least measurable - at the time of release. People make release decisions and let the chips fall.
Super interesting, Brad, and I’m glad to have your take on this. Definitely worlds apart on the 2019 Mara from my two bottles.
Ok, i popped a 2018 Hirsch Rose, and honestly, im still not sure what to think of it. I was really hopeful at first as the nose is really nice. Vinous Strawberries and some bread/yeast. But in the mouth…this is just odd. A hint of red fruits and some citrus but then the wine gets completely overwhelmed by an intense bitterness that lasts long into the finish. I keep trying to get more out of it but just end up with a plasticy/bitter note. I’ll give this some more air and see where we go from there…but right now it’s definitely not enjoyable.
Weird
Rich,
Is the bitter flavor metallic at all?
