Two refreshing Loire wines

  • 2000 Domaine des Baumard Savennières - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières (9/10/2009)
Delicious golden-hued color. Captivating nose that shows some age and oxidation, but it’s full of crisp fruit and minerals, with an intriguing richness behind it. In the mouth, quite lush and fleshy, but it has this undeniable linear focus that cuts a nice swath across the tongue. Bright acidity even still. Strong finish. Very tasty. A-
  • 2008 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Pinot Rosé - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre (8/30/2009)
This is a magnificent dry rose. Incredibly light copper color, as if the color is barely there. Lovely nose of strawberry, dried cherry, flowers, and a touch of minerals. In the mouth, this is a laser beam of light fruited goodness. Explodes across the tongue with fruit and acidity. Delightfully complex. You could drink this all day. Excellent wine. Stunning and refreshing. A-/A

Nice notes. While 2000 gets no publicity in the Loire I’ve found the few examples I’ve had - Baumard and Huet - to be surprisingly good. They’ll never be the '89s or the '02s but they really do drink quite well.

Hmmm, I like Crochet’s Sancerres a lot (especially his Les Chenes bottling). Wasn’t even aware they made a rose’ - interesting.
