Two recent wines: 97 Flaccianello and 02 Clos des Lambrays

  • 1997 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT (2/9/2014)
Last bottle of this, popped and poured. Dark garnet hue. Dense nose of cherry pits, violets, fecund earth. Intense, delineated flavors of tart cherry, red plum, leather, and currant on the palate with a slight wisp of oak. Moderate acidity still keeping things fresh, with tannins for the most part smoothed off. Long finish of red and black fruit, echoing with a bit of mineral and soy. Gorgeous wine, at or near peak. (93 pts.)
  • 2002 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru (1/28/2014)
Decanted for about an hour. Ruby hue. Nose was a persistent crescendo of red berry, flint, anise, cherry blossom, and earth. As the evening progressed, the palate opened to show steely, mineral spine laced with firm, aristocratic red raspberry and black cherry fruit. Still ample acidity and coiled structure balancing fine-grained tannins. Long, elegant finish with waves of perfectly proportioned red fruit and stone. Beautiful showing, with the promise of more to come. From a 375. (93 pts.)

Hey Doug - appreciate the 02 Lambrays note.
I keep eyeballing my singleton, and I keep saying, no be patient…get it to 15 years at least…
I have other years of this but man is it hard to keep away!

Hi Dan,

You are a wise man. This bottle will take years to peak. I have several of the 375 ml so I thought I’d try one. It was great but it will only get better.

Cheers,
Doug

I’d agree with the 93 points on the 2002 Lambrays but it haunts later in a way few young wines do.

George.

It’s got that something alright.

Cheers,
Doug
