FLIGHT 28 - CHILL DAY, LUNCH AT BAR FICO](https://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=49689#) (1 NOTE)

Wandered around the new neighborhood this morning and were greeted with some sort of parade right outside our door on Via dei Coronari. Next we headed over to Trastevere. Wow what a mob scene Sunday lunch time was there with groups of 50-100 people lined up at all the restaurants on the main drag. It was totally crazy, we assumed they must have been big tour groups or something. Happy to get away from the crowds we headed back to our hood and stopped for a light lunch of salads and a bottle of Pecorino for lunch at Bar Fico. Not particularly noteworthy but it was in a cute piazza and we had a shady table.

image

Continued our neighborhood wandering after lunch, trying to nail down the layout in this part of town where the narrow streets curve and change direction. Back home for a simple dinner on the terrace with some 2020 Ronchi di Cialla and an evening stroll across the river on Ponte Sant Angolo to Ponte Umberto. We enjoyed seeing the booksellers carts and little bar set among them - quite charming. 9 miles of wandering today!

FLIGHT 29 - LUNCH AT ARMANDO AL PANTHEON (3 NOTES)

Started the day with a 7 mile power walk over and up to Villa Doria Pamphili where we discovered a large section of the park that was new to us. Lots of walking groups with trekking poles out in the park today. Beautiful weather- great morning!

After stalking the website all summer I had finally secured a reservation for 2:15 lunch at Armando Al Pantheon today. As difficult to pin down as some of the hottest restaurants in NYC, this was our first time we were ever able to get a reservation. We were not disappointed, great food and service and a lovely bottle of wine. We shared the farro meatballs and pasta amatriciana to start and I had the veal saltimboca and as usual my husband had the chicken with peppers. For desert we tried the ricotta cake with strawberry jam which was amazing! Drank a 2018 Massa Costa de Vente with the meal plus a glass of Sabbatini Gialla orange wine the Somme picked for us as a follow up. Highly recommended if you can ever get a reservation.

From the wine list at Armando Al Pantheon, Rome. We had the ‘17 the other night and it was awesome so when we saw this on the list we decided to try. Served chilled but Somm suggested we let it warm up a bit so no ice bucket which was great as it’s expression intensified as it got warmer. Not quite as aromatic as the’17 but this was lovely with lots of structure and waxiness, stone fruit and freshly mown fields. With farro polpettine, pasta amatriciana and veal saltimboca. Delicious!

FLIGHT 30 - TIVOLI - VILLA D’ESTE AND VILLA ADRIANA (1 NOTE)

Tasting Story 10/4

Today we did our first day trip out to Tivoli. Despite a lot of on-line guidance suggesting public transit was not the easiest we thought it was fairly simple and very inexpensive. We took the metro from Spagna to Termini and caught the 9:03 train to Tivoli - a 55 minute ride for 3 euro each. The walk from the train station to Villa d’Este was 1.2 miles with about half of that headed uphill. We had pre booked our tickets and 10:30 entry time online, but it probably wasn’t necessary as there was not a lot of visitors that day. The old hill town part of Tivoli is charming with narrow winding cobblestone streets, ancient buildings and cafes.

Villa d’Este was constructed in the 16th century for Cardinal Ippolito D’Este after he was made the governor of Tivoli. Apparently licking his wounds from not being made pope he decided to build this grand estate in the style of the Roman Empire. Upon entering the Villa there was a brief museum exhibit then onto the downstairs where you walk through a series of frescoed rooms very ornate and beautiful. Then outside and onto the main attraction, the gardens and spectacular fountains. Cascading down the hill in 5-6 levels it is just awe inspiring. Currently not all of the fountains are operating as I imagine the maintenance is significant, but the ones that are were fabulous! A true delight for the senses beautiful to look at, the sounds of rushing water, the smell of fragrant plants and the feel of dappled sunlight, shade and cool breezes.

image

image

image

image

From there we headed to Villa Adriana, which is not in walking distance, but the town offers a tourist bus connecting the attractions. You must first find the pizza parlor that sells the tickets and then the bus stop. A bit complicated but we figured it out. Villa Adriana was Hadrian’s sprawling country estate built in 121 AD. An extensive campus of ruins, be prepared to log some miles here. Most of the marble and statuary were apparently stripped for the building of Villa d’Este in the 16th century but you can still get a feel for the grandeur of the of the Emperor’s lifestyle. Two very different but equally interesting UNESCO world heritage sites.

FLIGHT 31 - MUSEI CAPITOLINE AND DINNER AT TAVERA AGAPE (2 NOTES)

After countless times walking past the imposing facade of the Basilica San Andrea Della Valle on Via Vittorio Emmanuelle, today we decided to stop in for a brief visit. Despite its somewhat gritty exterior this church with a large dome visible in the Rome skyline, was quite ornate inside with large mirrors positioned for better viewing of the ceiling frescos. Built between 1590 - 1650.

image

Next stop was a visit to the Capitoline Museum, a first visit for us despite many trips to Rome. Many of the older statues in the city have been moved into the museum here for preservation from the elements, most notably the statues of Marcus Aurelius and Romulus and Remus. Fascinating museum with a large collection of statuary and paintings.

image

After our visit we strolled through the jewish ghetto and stopped for drinks at Bar Tartarughe - cute and quaint.

Tonight’s dinner was at Taverna Agape situated in the beautiful Piazetta San Simeone off Via dei Coronari - we made a reservation without proper research- mistake #1! The meal started off with a power outage (never resolved)- that delayed the arrival of any food by over an hour. No worries we were enjoying our wine and not in a hurry. Lots of other diners were melting down and yelling at the staff but we thought the dinner by candlelight was charming. Finished our wine before food arrived and ordered a second bottle from the list but our waiter convinced us to try something better without actually seeing it on the list - mistake #2! The wine (an Etna Bianco) was fine but he charged us 55 euro for a 10 euro bottle of wine. Since we never actually saw the price on the list we didn’t feel like we could contest. He also tried to charge us for food that was never delivered - which we did ask to have adjusted. Anyway despite looking pretty - this is a tourist trap I would avoid at all costs.

From the wine list at Taverna Agape, Rome. A new producer again, this was a quite good. Not as serious and complex as the Masa wines but nice texture and balance. FLIGHT 32 - MERCATO TRIONFALE, ENOTECA BORONE, DINNER ON THE TERRACE (5 NOTES)

Today we decided to explore the Mercato Trionfale over in Prati, the largest Mercato in the city. We browsed the stalls and loaded up on produce and fruit as we have friends arriving for a 5 day stay tomorrow. Not a lot of prepared food stalls at this market, but we did find a few and picked up lunch which we ate on the steps outside the market and also some Eggplant Parm which we would heat at home for dinner.

image

Another trip to the grocery store for essentials and Enoteca Constantini to load up on wine. Guest arrival means more provisioning than normal.

After all our hard work, we rewarded ourselves with a quick visit to Enoteca Bortone - a charming tiny wine bar just down the street from Il Goccetto.

FLIGHT 33 - DRINKS AT IL GOCCETTO AND DINNER AT GIULIO PASSIMA L’OLIO (3 NOTES)

Our friends from Utah arrived for a 5 day visit this afternoon and we were excited to see them as it had been over a year. We celebrated their arrival by promptly heading over to Il Goccetto for wine and a snack. We absolutely love this place - the outdoor tables are awesome - shady scenic street, great wine and friendly service. Always available in the afternoon.
image

After our snack we took what we refer to as the standard monument stroll - Campo Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi and headed home to rest before dinner.

Dinner tonight at Guilo Passim l’olio around the corner from our AirBnB. Lively place with an extensive wine list and really tasty food - friendly local vibe with tables outside and relaxed warm service. We started with the Mortadella Straccitella Foccacia, then had various pastas, osso bucco, chicken and tiramisu for desert. A great night!

FLIGHT 34 - SHOPPING AND DINNER AT TAVERNA VOLPETTI (3 NOTES)

My friend is a shopper - so that is pretty much what we did on Saturday while the boys went for a monster walk across Rome.

Dinner tonight was at Taverna Volpetti over in Testaccio, we opted to walk which is about 2 miles each way. We dined inside tonight. Shared the beef tartare with peaches and hazelnuts which was amazing, zucchini flowers and swordfish crudo to start. For mains we had scallops, ombrina, monkfish pasta and testaroli. Finished off by sharing the Robiolo Cheesecake with Passion Fruit which was outstanding. The food here is really special - also great service and interesting wine list. FLIGHT 35 - WALKING THE APPIA ANTICA AND DINNER AT ROSCIOLI (3 NOTES)

Today we planned to walk on the Appia Antica, which is a bit outside of town so took a taxi and were dropped off near the tourist information center. This was a bit confusing as there was a lot of cars on the road and it was before the ancient pedestrian zone. We ended up diverting down a side street and walked through a trail in park land before eventually merging back to the start of the old road. Quick and simple lunch at a little snack bar then onto the antique road. Large stones with ruins on either side and a bike path that runs along the side. Very scenic, but tough walking on these stones - wear sturdy shoes. Glad we did this as it was relatively empty and quite beautiful.
image

We got lucky and quickly were able to flag a taxi on the main road. Our taxi driver apparently likes to sing karaoke with his passengers while filming you and putting it on his instagram channel. Our voices were a bit of a disappointment to him but we all laughed very hard and the ride went by quickly.

Dinner tonight at Roscioli Salumeria again - the restaurant that is on all the visitors request lists. Salumi plate, buratta with sun dried tomatoes, tortellini, fish and carbonara with the mortadella dolce for desert. Great meal!

FLIGHT 36 - DINNER AT EMMA PIZZERIA (3 NOTES)

This morning we had tickets for the new Van Gogh Exhibit at Palazzo Bonapart that just opened. The exhibit was fairly crowded which was to be expected, but it wasn’t as extensive as I was hoping. Was interesting to see but if you have been to the Van Gogh museum before probably not a must do.

image

In between morning art exhibit and dinner there was time for more shopping this time in Monti and back to Via Vittoria.

Dinner tonight at Emma Pizzeria which was terrific. Everyone loved the food and service here. We started with burrata shaved with white truffles, a mixed salad and an avocado salad. Then we shared three pizzas - margarita, Prosciutto and Bianco with anchovies. Ended with a shared mixed desert plate. Highly recommend!

Similar to prior experience, I really prefer the Jesi verdicchios to the Matelica. This was quite lean and tart without the offsetting depth of fruit. Really needed the food to offset the acidity. Interesting how two expressions of the same grape can be so different.

But it sneaks up on you, and before long you realize it has some real character. Long, ethereal, persistent, nuanced and elegant. Goes well with a variety of foods. Not quite at the Carema level, but not far behind.

@Peter_Kleban Thanks I will keep my eye open for the Sorpasso Carema. Interesting regarding the Verdicchio we just spent a morning visiting some winemakers there and I asked about the Castelli di Jesi wines vs the Matelica wines. Ricardo from La Staffa explained that Metallica is further inland in a small valley surrounded by mountains so they have a cooler climate and tend to be a bit leaner. Although even in Jesi which is a bigger territory there can be a lot of variation by village, exposition and elevation. Fun visit I will post on separately. Appreciate your feedback!

FLIGHT 39 - RAINY DAY TRIP TO CENTRALE MONTEMARTINI, TESTACCIO MERCATO DINNER AT HOME (2 NOTES)

Rainy day today, so we took a taxi over to Ostiense to explore the Museo Centrale Montemartini. Housed in an old historic power plant that is no longer in use. The museum houses a selection of sculptures and archaeological artifacts that are set among the large industrial engines. Makes for a very visually striking display. Less crowded than other museums and definitely worth a visit.

image

By the time we finished at the museum the rain had tapered off to a light drizzle so we opted to walk over to the Testaccio Mercato for lunch and some grocery shopping. On the way, we happened by the Museo diffuse del rione Testaccio, a cemetery for British soldiers that were killed during WWII. It was very peaceful and quiet, and quite moving. If you happen to be in that area stop and take a moment to reflect.

image

In contrast to the Trionfale Mercato, there were lots of stalls with prepared foods and tables to eat at in the Testaccio Mercato. I grabbed a delicious Vitella e Carciofi sandwich from Box #15 Mordi & Via. Lots of choices here and a long line - so clearly very popular! My husband made a healthier choice and opted for a Farro Salad from a different stall.

image

After lunch - we stopped at a few stalls to buy fruit & vegetables. Then wanting some chicken to make at home we stopped at a butcher stall - earlier we had passed by and they had a tray of beautiful thin breaded cutlets - but now they were all gone. We asked if they had more and with in 2 minutes - he filleted a whole chicken, sliced, breaded and packaged the cutlets for us - amazing! Something like 6 euro for 3 cutlets hand prepared!

From here we headed over to a cafe in Testaccio for a caffeine bump before taking the 2 mile walk back to our apartment. Also a quick stop in the handy home goods store we found here to buy some ice cube trays for the apartment - Ice is a rare commodity in Rome. We are finding we really love this neighborhood and would probably seek to stay here if in Rome again.

Chilled on the terrace for the afternoon and made dinner at home. 6 miles of walking - back in the saddle again!

FLIGHT 40 - MORNING TRIP TO OSTIA ANTICA AND LUNCH AT IL GOCCETTO (3 NOTES)

Today we did a half day trip out to visit Ostia Antica. Walked to the Circo Massimo Metro Station (about 1.5 miles), at the Basilica San Paolo stop we transferred to the Lido line and took it to Ostia Antica (about a 30 minute journey). Train delivers you very close to the entrance of the park.

The park is quite large - so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for walking the old stone paths. It stretches out about one mile from end to end - centered around a main boulevard, then with cross streets as you get the center of the village that go in either direction. Very well preserved with the walls of most of the buildings largely intact, many mosaic floors still visible and it is easy to envision the layout of the community. Founded in 620 BC, it was a port city that thrived due to the nearby salt flats used to preserve meat and later became a Roman naval base and then a commercial port during the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome the port was abandoned and the harbor silted up, covering the ruins. When it was excavated much of the ruins were still largely intact. I really enjoyed this visit and found it more relatable than a visit to Pompei a number of years ago. After a couple hours of wandering the site, we took the train back to Rome.

FLIGHT 41 - EXPLORING PIGNETO (1 NOTE)

Today we decided to explore a new neighborhood for us Pigneto. We took the metro from Piazza Spagna to to San Giovanni and walked to Pigneto from there. A fun, funky, young neighborhood with lots of wall mural street art - has a Brooklyn vibe. Via Pigneto a pedestrian only street runs down the middle and is packed with a local street market, cafes and restaurants. The street runs down to the train tracks, which are crossed by a pedestrian bridge to reach the metro station and other side of the neighborhood. We tried to grab a table at Necca dal 1938 for lunch, but they were fully committed with no shady tables available. So we walked back over the bridge and tried Bosco - a small restaurant that specializes the cuisine of Abruzzo with a focus on truffles and natural wine. Great lunch here and the owner was a really nice guy. We got to see the daily haul of truffles arrive from Abruzzo - smelled delicious!

From Pigneto we walked home, stopping to visit San Giovanni in Laterno Church. One of four papal churches in Rome (St. Peter’s at the Vatican, St. Maria Maggiore and St. Paul outside the walls are the other three). It is a huge cathedral with large striking statues of the apostles lining the walls. Very impressive!

Closer to home we stopped for a glass of wine/beer at a tiny little bar - Pane e Pane. Got into a funny conversation with the older gentleman who owned the bar and upon learning we were from NYC, he told us stories of how in the 80’s he used to go to NYC a lot to sell Italian Strip Bonds to JP Morgan!!

Dinner at home tonight with an evening walk down to the Pantheon! 10 miles today!

Italy, Abruzzi, Abruzzo

(10/15/2022)

From the wine list at Bosco, Rome. A restaurant that specializes in the mountain food of Abruzzo, particularly truffles. We paired this with pumpkin soup with black truffle, bruschetta and taglioni with white truffle. Slightly hazy, the taste was clear and clean, minerals and salinity with apple and citrus. Went well with the food.

FLIGHT 42 - LUNCH AT PIERLUIGI (2 NOTES)

Started the day with a brisk power walk along the lower banks of the Tiber. We started on the Rome side closest to our apartment but after a few bridge sections we discovered lots of homeless encampments and a generally untended path - but we saw tons of people exercising on the Trastevere side - so climbed up and crossed over to the other side at the Sisto Bridge. Lots of bikers, runners and walkers getting exercise on this beautiful morning. We did six miles (3 out/3back) and were surprised how quiet and green the scenery became once we passed through the Trastevere neighborhood.

image

Sunday lunch reservations today at Pierluigi - probably the fanciest place we ate during our stay in Rome. All seating is done outside in the piazza under large umbrellas for shade. Pricing here for food is more akin to NYC and the wine list prices are much higher than elsewhere in Rome. The seafood and service were quite good though! Seems like quite the place to see and be seen in Rome.

Big lunch - no need for dinner tonight. 8 miles!

From the wine list at Pierluigi, Rome. This was delicious and paired brilliantly with the seafood lunch. Mineral, crisp, rich fruit, elegant finish- delightful!

From the glass list at Pierluigi, Rome. Very crisp and racy, fine bubbles, lemony citrus and minerals. Didn’t really get any biscuit or richness- was all lean and more austere. Had as a starter before food was served.

FLIGHT 43 - ARA PACIS, EXPLORING PRATI, PANIFICIO BONCI (1 NOTE)

Started the morning with a visit to the Ara Pacis Museum, having walked past this almost daily decided it was time for a visit. Really quite spectacular the size of the monument, but beware for a 10 euro admission price it is pretty much the only thing on display. We had previously seen panels that were removed from the Ara Pacis on the facade of the Villa Medici so it was nice to be able to link the two.

From here we crossed the bridge and decided to explore the Prati neighborhood. Stopped for a caffeine break at a friendly cafe on a tree lined street. Wandered around to get a feel for the neighborhood, seems very leafy and high end residential, with a few chic shopping streets, before interesting with the Vatican neighborhood. We decided to face the potential line and hit Panificio Bonci for lunch. Bonci was not open on Mondays, but they also sell the pizza at Panificio with a smaller selection. I had just watched the Chef’s Table Pizza Bonci episode on Netflix so was quite keen to try. Upon arriving you take a ticket and stand on the street until your number is called. Probably took about 20 minutes the day we were there. We tried the potato pizza, mortadella and focaccia and pizza Rossa with ricotta. Once you get the food you basically stand around on the street and eat it! Delicious!!! Walked home and chilled for a few hours.

After 5, we walked over to Enoteca Costantini to resupply wine as we have guests arriving in two days. Dinner at home with some Netflix. 8 miles today!

At home with dinner, this was fine if not a particular stand out for me. I think I prefer the Ribolla Gialla when it is blended with other grapes.

FLIGHT 44 - LUNCH AT MATRICIANELLA (2 NOTES)

So after being away from home for 6 weeks, guess what you got to get your hair taken care of. We got the name of a hair salon from a Roman who seemed to have great hair and made appointments for today. So the morning was spent taking care of the hair!!

Afterwards we headed for lunch at a restaurant I had been trying to get a reservation at for a while, Matriacella. This was recommended to us last month by Carolina from Tenuta Fiorano and I really wanted to try it before we left. Glad we did we had a great meal outside for lunch with a lovely bottle of 2017 Capo Martino.

Relaxed this afternoon as tomorrow guests arrive for four nights followed by a second set of guests for four more nights. A light walking day 4.5 miles.

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

(10/18/2022)

From the wine list at Matricianella, Rome. A blend of Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia and Picolit. First time with this wine and we really liked it. Rich golden color, concentrated nose of flowers and tropical fruit. On the palate this was waxy with balance between the fruit, nuts and acids. Persistent finish.

Picked this up at Enoteca Costantini, lower price point than the other Friulanos we’ve been drinking which was evident in the glass. Nose was aromatic but there was a pronounced bitter pithy note on this that I did not enjoy.

FLIGHT 45 - LUNCH AT CUL DE SAC (5 NOTES)

Started the day with an 8 mile power walk up through Piazza del Popolo, through the Borghese Gardens out to Via Veneto and then a long wander through the Sallustino neighborhood. Finished up with a caffeine break at a small cafe. Back home for a quick lunch as our friends from NYC are arriving today.

Excited to see our friends after a few months and celebrating some good news for them, we popped a bottle of Philipponnat on the terrace as a welcome! Too sunny at mid day on the terrace so we headed off to Il Goccetto to share a bottle of Emidio Pepe Cerosuolo. Back home on the terrace again - we moved onto a bottle of 2014 Quintarelli Alzero they had just picked on a visit to the winery. Oh yeah, this is going to be a long day!!

image

Early dinner at Cal de Sac outdoors tonight. We shared the mixed paté plate with Venison & black pepper, Veal & Tabasco and Country style. The Veal with Tabasco was outstanding! Also shared some tomato and buffalo mozzarella, mixed salad and chicory, lasagna and pasta Amatriciana. Needed all that food to handle the additional wine.

image

Much later around 10pm, the rest of the group made a pilgrimage to Da Bafetto for pizza, but I wisely passed and went to bed! 10 miles of walking today - but offset by lots of vino.

France, Champagne

(10/19/2022)

69% Pinot Noir, 28% Chardonnay 3% Meunière - disgorged May 22. Toasting our friends on some exciting news! This was nicely balanced and enjoyable with red fruits and citrus, light mousse. Seemed to disappear pretty quickly.

On the terrace with generous friends who had just picked this bottle up at the winery. Would have loved to give this a long decant, better yet another decade, but that’s not how we were rolling. Deep dark fruit and raisins on the nose. Lots of complexity going on the palate. Evokes Christmas and spices and fireside sipping. Lovely!

FLIGHT 46 - TOTAL BLOW OUT DAY! HARRY’S BAR-AL MORO- HOTEL RUSSIE BAR - DA BAFFETTO (3 NOTES)

And so begins another day of pretty hard partying! Good walk down to Piazza de Poppolo and up through the Gardens to Via Veneto - destination Harry’s Bar for morning Bellinis followed by Bloody Marys which bloody awful to be honest.

We then continued on our way to our 1:30 lunch at Al Moro. I know I have complained twice so you are asking why we are going again. It has been a favorite restaurant of ours and our friends so we never had been together - doing a big lunch there was long planned - so we stuck with it. Suspect this will be my last trip to Al Moro though - service was still pretty bad - team there just does not seem happy anymore. Sharing Buffalo Mozzarella, roasted porcini, artichokes, followed by pasta with white truffles. Some Mario Schiopetto M Friuliano and Rosso del Beppi to wash it all down. Then it was time to head to the Hotel Russie for afternoon cocktails!! Yet another disappointing dirty martini in Rome. Assorted cocktails for everyone else.

image

Walked home and enjoyed a final bottle on the terrace, before taking a long nap.

Just in time to wake up and go for 9pm Pizza at Da Baffetto - no line for 4 people sat right down. My first time here, our friends are maniacal for the pizza - want to eat it everyday in Rome. I got to say it is okay - but not sure I understand the cult status. 7 miles of walking - too many drinks to count!

From the wine list at Al Moro, Rome . We had the 2015 a month ago and loved it, but I did not care for this vintage nearly as much. Rich fruited, with acidity but also a bitter peach pit note on the finish that was a bit jarring for me.

From the wine list at Al Moro, Rome. Almost a year to the day we had the same wine at the same restaurant with the same server. Decanted and sat for about a half hour while we worked on the white. This is in a nice drinking window. Dark fruited with touches of raisins, it seems to wear its alcohol well, keeping everything in balance. Long mouth coating finish.

FLIGHT 47 - LATE LUNCH AT ROSCIOLI (3 NOTES)

Morning walk through Campo Fiore across the Sisto Bridge through Trastevere down to Enoteca Costantini, as our friends wanted to check out the selection. Back home for a little Lambrusco on the terrace.

2:30 pm lunch today at Roscioli Salumeria, seated downstairs. Great lunch and service here today. We ordered champagne which was not chilled so they served us all full glasses of free cold champagne while we waited. Additionally they gave us a free plate of salumi to compensate for the wait. We shared Brasaeola, Prosciutto & Mortadella, Buratta with sun dried tomatoes and caponata to start. For mains my husband I shared the Gricia and Polpette, while our friends had the Pasta with white meat ragu and the carbonara. We succumbed to temptation and shared the strawberry desert. Great meal!!

At this point I was completely done eating and drinking for the day as was everyone else. Well almost - much later in the evening we did share a glass of Jermann When I dream……

France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

(10/21/2022)

From the wine list at Roscioli Salumeria, Rome. Disgorged October 2017. This was outstanding, very much in the bready, rising dough, honey and creamy mouthfeel mode. Wonderful with assorted salumi, caponata and burrata with cherry tomatoes.

From the wine list at Roscioli Salumeria, Rome. Not decanted but served in very large bowl glasses so had time for some air. Beautiful concentrated nose of forest floor. This was drinking very well today - tannins are smooth and this is layered and complex more earth, cigar box, and leather than fruit. Loved it! With pasta gricia and polpette.

FLIGHT 48 - LUNCH AT ROMA SPARITA - POST GAME AT IL GOCCETTO (5 NOTES)

Very lazy morning - attempting to regroup from the excesses of the last few days. We met our friends over in Trastevere at the bar 404 Name Not Found - for a pre-lunch drink. 2pm lunch at Roma Sparita - outside. Same server as our last visit - really great guy. We ordered what seemed like everything on the menu to share: Grilled vegetables, Mussels marinara, Buffalo mozzarella, Roasted porcini, Grilled Calamari, Cacio e Pepe, Grilled Shrimp, Fried Zucchini blossoms and Chicken and peppers with Panacotta & Tiramisu for desert. Delicious but very filling!

image

After lunch we headed back to Il Goccetto to continue the festivities with a few more bottles of wine and then home for wine and potato chips on the terrace.

Afternoon naps - turned into evening sleep. Our friends however did rally for one last trip to Da Baffetto before their morning departure.

We had a great time, won’t see our buddies until we return from our year around the world, but also looking forward to getting back to a normal pace of life!

Great thread, thanks!

What were your top three meals (outside of Roschioli, where I have a reservation).

Thanks in advance!

Hi Barry- just realizing I never got back here to finish my story. Been so busy with a year of continuous travel which winds up in a couple of weeks. Our favorites:

  • Armando Pantheon
-Trecca - off the beaten path but excellent food - wine list focuses on natural wine
    -Emma Pizzeria
-Roma Sparita - casual sit outside cacio pepe
-Grano - love Sunday lunch here
    -Life
    -Colline Emiliane for tortellini

-Pierluigi is very good but very expensive- NYC level pricing

Have a good trip!

Hi Maire, so glad to hear that you’ve had a good year traveling. We’ve missed you! The time and energy you put into your posts are tops, one of the things that makes WB so interesting.

Thanks!

I have heard great things about Emma, but I go to Roschioli’s forno so often during y trip that I never go. Is the pizza there better than at the Forno Roschioli? Hard yo imagine e better than that.

I like Pierluigi and have recommended it around here in the past. You might also take a look at Il Sanlorenzo for great fish/shellfish. We haven’t been since 2018, though. For some time, it was Katie Parla’s favorite Roman fish restaurant.

Barry- it’s different if your asking about Antico Forno Roscioli compared to Emma ? Emma has wood fired pizza’s compared to the traditional by the square style of Forno. Emma also has a terrific wine list and broad menu of non pizza items so a good spot to work in a casual meal that usually satisfies. https://www.emmapizzeria.com/

We had solid meals at Emma and great snacks at Forno on our past trips.
