2007 Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon [from 375ml] – Deep crimson color. Vivid aromas of ripe black fruits, minerals and a hint of something resinous. The pine component is integrated and complements the ensemble. On the palate there is vigorous black fruit and substantial but fine ripe tannins. The wine is medium bodied and exhibits unusual purity. The mid-palate is solid and satisfying, with nice breadth. The finish is moderately long. Overall balance is excellent. Rated 93.14, could improve by a point over the next five years. Ready to go in 375ml if you like them young and vigorous.
2003 Carlisle Zinfandel Sonoma County Riebli Ranch – Very deep garnet. Excellent pungent aromas of blackberries and briers, with noticeable alcohol (hey, it’s Zinfandel, it’s OK). Gentle on the palate, ripe, broad, soft, warming, with more blackberries, a hint of licorice, a lot of earth and wonderful harmony. This is a beautiful, brawny wine that somehow manages subtlety as part of the package. The finish is long and actually less heated than the palate. With all due respect to Sutter Home, this is why Zinfandel exists. Rated 95.00.
