Tonight’s light supper, after yesterday’s great indulgence, was half a ripe California Haas avocado each, filled with a tuna salad on greens dressed with a lemon-Italian herb dressing. Wine was a 1992 Barton & Guestier Chateauneuf-du-Pape, surprisingly good for its age and a weak CndP vintage - good fill and sound cork; light nose and flavors of earthy dried fruit; balanced mid-palate of dried fruit and earth; and a medium somewhat drying fruit finish. Not great, but a pleasant surprise. It had been a gift from a friend, not really into wine, some years ago. I just decided to try it tonight with the tuna & avocado. This was enjoyed on our balcony, listening to the warm-ups for tonight’s anniversary concert and watching the approach of a major thunderstorm from the northwest.
Since we finished supper considerably before the planned start of the concert, to be followed by fireworks; we waited to close to 19:30 to return to the balcony with our dessert - ripe Black Mission Figs with Bleu d’Auvergne and Affinois Goat Brie and a nice 2001 Chateau Coutet Barsac. Both were enjoyable with the figs, but not a great a match as St. Andre cheese is. Shortly after 19:30, there was a PA system announcement, that I didn’t quite understand. As well rainfall had started, following a lot of lightning and thunder. No symphonic music followed and there were no fireworks. I guess the weather cancelled the evening’s activities.
A nice side note - I came in after finishing dessert to hear Saint-Saëns’ Symphonie d’Auvergne on the radio. it was a nice completion to the enjoyable Bleu d’Auvergne.
