Tuesday Lunch Bunch - 01/28/14

Another nice lunch yesterday with some very nice pairings! Meursault Perrieres vs. Charmes. Asparagus Veloute - Brulee Goat Cheese Crostini and Citrus Honey + Atlantic Salmon Gratin - Olive Oil Grape Tomatoes, Spinach, Mushroom and Bacon + Butter Poached Lobster Tail - Warm Potato Salad, Beet Puree, and Lemon Truffle Vinaigrette. The pictures of the food below doesn’t do the flavors justice - YUMMY!

The wines were overall very nice and we were looking for any problems with the Pox as we went. With the exception of one wine - they turned out fabulous! We had three flights of wines and tried to put a Perrieres with a Charmes each time to better judge.

2004 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes: Touch of reduction at first - the wine lightened up in the glass IMHO as it sat. Touches of natural oxidation - lusher touches of perfumed oak, honey, pear fruit, touches of light spearmint. Viscous in the mouth when compared to the Matrot. This one really added nice complexities toward the end and remained balanced. Got 2nd place in the end.

2005 Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: I hadn’t had a Matrot wine for a while now and remember finding a wee bit of the Pox in some of their 2002s but this was a long time ago. Touches of fennel and matchstick to start. Flashes of savory minerality throughout - creamy orchard fruits. 4th place overall in the end.

2004 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: Wet grass notes to start, pine resin, touches of honey laced orange blossoms, floral notes also. Quite up front on the nose throughout the lunch while adding more lemon cream notes as it sat. Nice acidity here! 3rd place overall in the end.

2007 Hospices de Beaune Meursault 1er Cru Charmes Cuvée Albert Grivault Faiveley (Hospices Auction Group): The first one of these I’ve sampled after getting them this past spring or thereabouts. Apple cream and allspice throughout - quite lush and forward when was first poured. Everyone pretty much agreed that this got more balanced and enjoyable as it sat - a nice wine from '07. Tied for 5th place in the end.

2007 Lucien Le Moine Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: Top wine from the lunch in the end. The last Le Moine blanc I had was a bottle of the '06 Batard which was dreadfully pox’d - a couple of years ago at this point. Touch of stank to start which quickly blew off - lots of minerality and savory salinity throughout. Flashes of mint, high toned citrus cream - a promise of a long future from this showing.

2008 Hospices de Beaune Meursault 1er Cru Charmes Cuvée Albert Grivault Faiveley (Hospices Auction Group): Touches of bruised apples that did dissipate a bit as it sat - just seemed a bit advanced from this bottle which is the first from the ones I got. Really not “overly” oxidized and still had a nice flavor profile overall. Just didn’t do it for me - last place!

2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: A so so showing for this one - just seemed to be lacking for whatever reason when I compared this wine to its '04 version and the wines from '07. It seemed to get more complex as it sat but just didn’t get there? Anywho - it wasn’t corked or pox’d - just seemed average. Tied for 5th place in the end.

Do you guys go back to work after these lunches? [cheers.gif]

Of course, Paul, all of us head out, back to work following lunch. [basic-smile.gif]

Can’t argue with the consensus results, although my own choices varied a bit from the group results. The wines appeared to evolve nicely with some time, but our palates also had the benefit of the food courses by that time. I very much liked the fresh floral aromas in the Bouchard Estate Perrieres, together with the nutmeg spice; harmoniously structured, carrying the flavours in a lengthy finish. In thinking back over my notes this would have been my top choice. However, all of the wines did show some remarkable characteristics and could find a place at my table. To some degree I believe palate preferences between the Charmes and the Perrieres influenced individual choices.

Great tasting; great food and excellent company and conversation.

Thanks for the organization and posting the notes, Jon. [highfive.gif]

Work…What’s that??? [snort.gif]

I thought that the wines were true to form with their respective terroir. Perrieres tasted like Perrieres ‘should’ (minerality, acidity, etc) with the higher elevation, rocky soil, etc and Charmes being lower on the slope/ richer soil, etc. showing a typical lush, more fruit forward style. My preferences were the Perrieres. All were good…especially the Le Moine ( with that great expressive floral nose) and 04 Bouchard. To me the 04 Jadot Charmes was good, but starting on the downward curve. I’d drink up if I had them in my cellar.

It was a great lunch as usual. Next up 02 burgs in honor of Brad E who will be making a guest appearance…should be fun. champagne.gif
