I am contemplating a visit to Bern’s this summer, but wonder how I’ll spend my time when I’m not eating and drinking. Are there any suggestions for good hotels near the restaurant? Anything much to do in the area?

I don’t recall there being any decent hotels near Bern’s. It isn’t exactly the best area of town to begin with. There is lots of renovation going on in the area with new bars and restaurants and the like but I don’t recall any place I’d stay. My two cents worth is to get something on the water front and either drive your rental car over there or take a taxi if you’re afraid of getting pinched by Johnny Law.
Depending on when you go you can do the obvious things like go to the beach. If you’re into baseball maybe catch a game. If you’re into art definitely take the drive over to St. Pete and visit the new Dali museum. Best collection of Dali outside of Spain.

The Intercontinental or the Renaissance are your best bets for hotels. Both are about the same price and about the same distance from Bern’s. I tend to prefer the Renaissance. There are a few decent golf courses to check out, if that is your thing. The Dali museum is really worth it IMO. Otherwise Tampa doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.
