I was underwhelmed by this 2007 Fratelli Revello [Barolo] over a couple of nights. I’m not sure if this is the producer BK_(d) is referring to as it seems there are a few with that name, but this was a Marc de Grazia import, and is 15% abv, with a dark robe, and full body, so it seems like a fair suspect. This is so different than a (lovely) Castello de Neive of the same vintage from a month or two ago! On the nose I get licorice, prunes, dried fruit, and then on the second day – matchsticks. It’s still tannic, acidic and feels oaky / modernista; it is still youthfully primal. It’s a solid wine, but it wasn’t what I was expecting for a teenage Barolo. There’s a collector in our local tasting group who describes wines being made for the cellaring palate versus the professional critics’ taste. The latter show well when presented for sale or in tasting panels with peers. But the patient cellar palate might have a different preference as time goes on; this Revello is a study in that, feeling like it was not intended for that kind of buyer. Overall, I’d give it a B but maybe it just needs another ten years sideways … and a couple of rib eyes. Natural cork closure.
So many great insights from past contributors on WB !
