Comparison and an example as an afterthought. St. Andre is $9.99 per pound at TJ’s here. I think that’s it, but it might be as high as $11.99 No matter. At the supermarkets, it’s $18.99 and that’s if you can find it. It’s more yet at the specialty stores and cheese shops.
There is a Fairway in Paramus NJ on E. Ridgewood. We drive past it when we visit our friends’ country place up near Woodstock NY, and often stop in for a quick shopping trip. It is a bastion of wonderfulness for sure!!
My son likes TJ, I haven’t been quite as impressed – and there isn’t one really close to me.
I was in Fairway this afternoon, saw St Andre for $16/lb. One day I’ll buy it and TJ’s and compare. By an large though, the cheeses have not impressed. For meats I find the TJ prices the same or higher and the quality diff is wide. I am not a fan of prepared frozen food so I have no coment on that, produce isn’t even a consideration at TJ compared to Fairway.
I buy the following at TJ’s because the prices can’t be touched except at Costco for ridiculous portions on some items:
Romaine Hearts
Reggiano
Fresh mozzarella
Olive oil for cooking
Canned tomatoes
Nuts
Some dairy
Jarred roasted red peppers and Kalamata olives
Pop-up sponges
Lavender soap
The real Greek feta in brine
St. Andre
Emmenthaler and gruyere
Generic triple creme brie
Goat cheese
Pre-grated “parmesan” and “romano” for when I’m making something where real Reggiano is a waste
Bagged baby spinach
Charcoal
I’m sure there are more things, but that’s what I can come up with off the top of my head. I don’t buy meat there except some salumi now and then. They used to have a good pate campagna, but I haven’t seen it lately.
Colombo Turkey (low salt for me, but they have more flavorful varieties)
Pistachio nuts
Cashews
Dried Peaches
Dried Cherries
Produce (as good as Whole Paycheck and cheaper, but not as cheap as Costco)
Crackers
Bottled Water
Egg White Salad
Yogurt
Hummus
Seaweed Snacks
Chicken Burgers
Mornignstar Light Links and veggieburgers
Shrimp Potstickers
Lime Frozen Bars (best 60 calorie dessert evah!)
Etc.
(I have no doubt that I’d shop at Fairway over TJs, but this board exists west of the hudson too).
IIRC, it’s $9 or $10 per pound, or something ridiculously cheap for a cheese that tasty. It basically tastes like a jack or provolone with black truffle. It’s sublime.
