Top three white Burgundy producers in your cellar

Pretty big fall off after those two in numbers, likely one of Montille, Drouhin, Pillot or Ramonet is third.

Jean-Michel Chartron is a mate. As it happens he also makes pretty smart wine, I’ve been happy to buy lots. Bachelet-Monnot Bourg Blanc 2014 was our wedding white and has become our house white Burg.

well, if I may combine Domaine Henri Boillot with Henri Boillot, my top three are Louis-Michel, Henri Boillot (those two tied) and then Hubert Lamy. I wish the answer were Carillon but too hard to find now + I drink them.

I have liked all his wines. Obviously, the grand cru is better than his premier crus, which are better than the villages wine, which is better than the Bourgogne Blanc. The Bourgogne Blanc is a pretty good $25 bottle of Chardonnay (which is what I paid for the 2017). Side by side, I have found his Chassagne Montrachet villages wine about comparable to the St. Aubin premier cru and probably, on average, I have liked his Morgeots the most of his premier cru CMs other than the Grands Ruchottes, which I have tasted at the winery and which is great, but I have never found for sale.

Have been hearing a lot about Bernard Moreau as of late but haven’t gotten around to trying any of the wines. Are there any bottlings in particular that you think are a good introduction to the house style?

The style is incisive, concentrated and elegantly textural. There’s an I’ll Drink To That podcast with Alex Moreau if you want to take a deep dive. My latest blurb accompanying my TWA tasting notes is as follows:

“What are the rudiments of this 14-hectare estate’s success? As I wrote last year, the domaine represents a loose division of labor between two brothers: Benoit, who concerns himself with the vineyards, and Alex, who oversees the cellar. In the vineyard, they use only organic fertilizers and no pesticides. In the cellar, Alex Moreau appreciates long fermentations and extended sur lie élevage without stirring, the wines finishing their maturation in stainless steel where they generally see a light fining. New oak, largely from François Frères, is judiciously chosen. Beautifully balanced and differentiated by site, these are some of the most compelling white Burgundies being made today, and I once again warmly recommend them to readers.”

My money is where my mouth is, as Moreau is my largest holding in white Burgundy.

Top three by volume in my cellar are Moreau, Ramonet and Raveneau.

My numbers for each of these are much lower than for my top red Burgundy producers, which makes sense as I do not want to hold white Burgundies for long periods anymore.

I have enjoyed his red villages CM a number of times but only tasted the Cardeuse for the first time a couple of years ago at the winery. Very excited that in the last year or so I have found some Cardeuse (2016) to buy and just a couple of months ago I found his 2014 Volnay Clos du Chenes!!! Never had his Volnay before!!!

I’m sort of the opposite; I haven’t drank any white burg since the fall, probably a good reason to stop buying.

PYCM, Lafon, Ramonet. I’m actually buying way more white burgundy than red these days. Feeling less concerned about premox and also happy to drink some of them young.
