Clockwise from nearest you: Moskovitch, Sun Gold, Striped German, Ananas Noir and Brandywine.
so THAT’S what garden-fresh tomatoes look like! I wouldn’t know, because the critters have eaten EVERY SINGLE TOMATO that I grew this season!
How do you keep the critters out?
Which critters? I’ve never seen a tomato hornworm in Oregon but the squirrels did get in and ate a bunch of Sun Golds and part of one Moskovitch. I left it out there on the ground so they’d have easy snacking and, hopefully, leave the rest alone. I picked all the fruit you see yesterday and most of it’s a little under-ripe, so they’ll have to ripen on the counter for a few days, but I didn’t want to tempt the little rodents any more than necessary. The deer haven’t been around lately.
Ground squirrels mostly - tobacco worms got maybe 3 total, but it was the ground squirrels that just go like gangbusters on my fruit.
You probably stand out there and bully them - that keeps them away, right?

Simple, he basically tells them that their palate is shit and that they don’t know the first thing about Oregon tomatoes.

“Not the Sun Gold!!! Are you an idiot? The Brandywines are obviously FAR superior!”

I have used “liquid fence” not on the fruit but around it and fox urine. One or the other worked this year.

You bastard! You got all my tomatoes. All I got is blackrot.
