TNs: You have to love Ed Kurtzman and Sandler

  • 2006 Sandler Wine Company Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (10/4/2009)
14.5% alcohol. Such a pretty wine. Lovely nose of black cherry, blackberry, spice, and earthy notes. In the mouth, smooth and round mouth feel, with juicy fruit cascading across the palate, enhanced by spice and earth notes that bring in a floral overtone as well. Good acidity. Long finish. A really excellent value wine. Ed Kurtzman is masterful with this label. A-
  • 2007 Sandler Wine Company Syrah Connell Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (10/4/2009)
13.9% alcohol. Wow, this is stunning. I can’t believe how well it was showing this early in its evolution. Deep purple color. Stunning nose of spicy, meaty black and blue fruit, with a peppery note in the background. In the mouth, a great example of how you can make full-bodied Syrah while maintaining focus and keeping the wine from being flabby at all. Bursting forth with focused, concentrated fruit and loads of complexity. The blue fruits come to the forefront, layered with earth, meat, and a forest floor note. Pepper-laced acidity leads to a surprisingly caressing finish, with soft tannins that just coasts along. In a word? Awesome. The Sandler Syrah might be one of the most overlooked wines from 2005-2007. A-/A
  • 2007 Sandler Wine Company Zinfandel Buck Hill Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/4/2009)
15.7% alcohol. This is so Carlisle in style, with just a bit more sweetness on the palate. Deep red color. Brambly notes mix with the jammy fruit on the nose. In the mouth, rich and plush, a classic big style of Zin that just jumps out of the glass. You find yourself pouring another glass before you know it. A touch of heat on the back end. But just a pleasure to drink. A-

Thanks for the tasting notes. I already slammed through all of the '07 zins that I purchased from Sandler (and I am not much of a zin fan) - but had been holding off on the syrahs. Sounds like it might be time to crack into one of those…

We had a very different experience with the 2005 Sandler Syrah last night:

Paul – yeah, this was my last 07 Zin. I couldn’t keep my hands off. It freaking rocked. Every bottle.

Walter – bummer you didn’t dig the 05 Sandler Syrah. I had a bottle of that about 18 months ago that was smoking good. I’ve got another one kicking around that I was planning to open in a few years. I recall it being one of the most Rhone-styled California Syrahs I’ve had. In any case, different strokes! Great notes on the Syrah dinner, btw.
