Continuing in my quest to either agree with or refute Monsieur De L’s hypothesis regarding the change in wine making at Felsina (and also because my wife happened to make chicken cacciatorre for dinner tonight!), I opened up two more wines from Felsina & Castell’in Villa. Both wines are drinkable right now, although at least IMO, neither could be described as typical of what I look for in Chianti.

2009 Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (9/30/2014)
Translucent ruby at the core, lightening out to brick on the rim; red fruits on a primary nose.
Much more together than the 2008 I posted about last night, and also clearly made in a riper style, reflective of the vintage. Rich enough to almost come across as a red-fruited liquer; I like this popped & poured wine a lot right now, but would say it’s coming across more like a ripe red as opposed to a typical Chianti.

2009 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (9/30/2014)
Similar in color to the Castell’ in Villa; reticent, red-fruited nose.
Also has the red-fruited liquer note I mentioned in the first wine; I don’t personally think of 2009 as as hot & ripe of a vintage as 2003, but both of these wines are clearly ripe and fruit-forward, so it will be interesting to see how they age and develop in bottle. Tonight, the Felsina is just a little bit more “Chianti-like”, but I don’t know that I would pick either of these wines out blind right now as being from Tuscany.
