TNs: Two Gary Farrell PNs

  • 2003 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Rochioli-Allen Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (10/12/2009)
14.2% alcohol. This has really come around over the past couple years, and it’s just starting to come into its own. Dark cherry color. Luscious bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, subtle spice, earth, flowers, and minerals. This is classic RRV Pinot. In the mouth, quite lush yet also restrained and superemely elegant. A beautiful marriage of these two distinctive vineyards, with the Rochioli providing the powerful and bright fruit and spice so typical of RRV, along with the more feminine tea, earth, and floral notes to the Allen Vineyard’s more red-fruit profile. Strong acidity. Long finish. Texturally compelling, as well. This is terrific and has plenty of time ahead. A-/A
  • 2006 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Ramal Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Carneros (10/10/2009)
14.4% alcohol. Quadruple decanted. Yes, quadruple, and to great effect – initially a bit grapey and oaky. The extra air revealed a very pretty wine. Deep red color. Fragrant bouquet of light oak, black cherry, blackberry, spice, and flowers. In the mouth, a slightly jammy edge to the blackberry and cherry fruit. Subtle spice, toast, and floral notes couple nicely with the bright acidity. Refreshing finish that sails on pleasantly. A-
